  • Odd question. I’m building an garden cinema and I’m in need of a sub has anyone had any experience with the ones you dig in the ground.

  • No.

But I'm supper interested in how this goes.

Never imagined a buried sub. It looks like some sort of over priced BBQ sorry smoker

  • Bet the neighbours will love this.

  • the streaming over wifi will be better then Bluetooth

If you're using a Chromecast it's already streaming over WiFi.

I have a Marantz PM6007. It's got optical and coax inputs for Chromecast and TV and a phono stage. Think it's pretty similar to the 7000N without the connected stuff but is half the price.

  • Yes, that does seem pretty antisocial. I'll keep an eye out on the bastard neighbours thread...

  • Outdoor speakers in town are definite bastard neighbours territory.

  • Nice set up 👌

  • I created my own street cinema during lockdown. I brought one these along with a projector and started playing movies in a church carpark. After lockdown, it moved into my garden and now twice a month about ten neighbours come around and we watch a film. We start films at Dusk and never go past 2300. I try to be considerate and so far haven't had any complaints.

  • Sounds like an exercise in building rather than tearing down, nicely done.
If the films end before 2300h anyway I think it’s great, better than a fucking leaf blower/lawnmower/auto…

  • I always remember a garden Diarmuid Gavin did back in the day where it was a townhouse type thing broken into flats and they made a big communial garden which he built an outdoor cinema into.

Always dreamt of something like that.

  • This actually sounds great.
Tempted to do something similar, but dense Berlin backyard would mean a lot of people affected.

  • Got the wee oak full range speakers out the loft. Missed them.

  • Nice looking speakers

  • Nice looking everything damn son. Yes. Even the litter box isn't too bad.

  • How is that wall finish achieved?

  • looks like painted breeze blocks (i mean that in a nice way...)

  • Yep, painted blocks.

  • That step is nice, very pragmatic and cool
    Speakers also nice.
Litter box, dunno. But can relate.

  • Those speakers look great and the room looks lovely. How are the room acoustics though? Looks challenging!

  • Great looking space.

Is the chair comfortable with the movers blankets?

  • I must have misread @JB 's post and was hunting the photo for a letter box!

  • … and the nice officers with guns turn up to sort things out.

On the other hand, I expect you don’t have to put up with garden parties until 4am, so there’s a lot to be said for Germany’s approach to law enforcement.

  • Speaker advice welcome for my “vault”.
It’s a space in our basement that has been designated a room by dint of a hanging blanket and a suspended Expedit bookshelf. So on the North we have a concrete foundation wall with some cheap hardboard treatment and minimal insulation (our foundation exterior was insulated with 2” SM many years ago at great expense). On the East is the blanket, on the South the Expedit and on the West is a single layer of the aforementioned hardboard between my shop space and the Vault. The concrete floor is covered firstly by a Delta drainboard, hardboard, underlay, and finally an old hand woven rug covering the entire (3m x 4m) space. The ceiling is open joists with a Tyvek-type product stapled to it. : )
I’ve finally admitted my rose-coloured ears don’t actually enjoy my vintage Realistic Nova 8B speakers (still happy with the HK 430 Twin upstairs) and I want to upgrade to decent bookshelves.
My amp is a Marantz 5005, a NAD C521 BEE CD player and a Rega P1 turntable. My budget is about 2 grand, so 1200 or so Sterling.
I listen to Rock, Reggae, Folk, Gospel, a little Jazz and Classical.
Sources are the previous plus computer and radio.
One thing in terms of sound preference is I don’t like it too bright on top, I grew up with the warm sound of rolled off treble and given the choice of accuracy and clarity vs that sound I lean towards the latter.

Listening in store has never worked for me and there aren’t any places in town that would lend me speakers. I would like to buy Canadian but am open to anything good really that comes in under my limit.
Watched reviews of Wharfdale Lintons, Axiom M5HP, Dynaudio Emit 10…

    Any ideas welcome!

TLDR - bookshelf speakers, talk to me

  • Totem? They're all over Canuck Audio Mart and I think they'd suit your listening preferences. They definitely are not bright up top. I have the same preferences as you and I really, really love my Totem's. Out of all of the things I own that I get bored of very quickly, be it bicycles, watches or whatever else, my Sky Tower's are the only thing I can't bring myself to let go of and switch out.

Should work well with your Marantz, also.

  • How are the room acoustics thought? Looks challenging!

Obviously very lively but they do sound good with simple stuff like jazz. Maybe the joists help with diffusion… IDK. They’re mainly for music to cook and entertain to so not really critical. The Tannoys will be next door in the living room where that sofa will end up. It’s also a concrete box, but is getting a rockwool & membrane ceiling to try and counter the flutter echo.

Litter tray and packing blankets are temp, but quite comfy. You’ll probably see them pop up in furniture I design soon 😉
