• Having to buy our first car as my wife is changing jobs and no longer gets a company car (boo). We're both pretty clueless when it comes to cars so looking for a bit of Hive Mind advice...

We're tempted by a mid sized SUV something like a Mazda CX5, Volvo XC40, Seat Ateca, Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson etc. It'll need to be automatic as my wife won't drive a manual. Budget in the £10-15k range. Any pitfalls to watch out for / things to avoid / models to stay clear of?

  • It is not mine but I do a lot of driving for someone who has a 2020 year Peugeot 2008. It is a 1.2 petrol, with the highest bhp (c150), auto. It is the GT spec, so is well equipped. If you want to hypermile a bit you can get close to 50mpg. I would not normally expect to rave about a Peugeot, but it is an all-round excellent car. Not huge. I am not sure about 2nd hand prices.
I have also driven an Ateca, also very good, but it was lower spec so not like for like.
SUVs get some bad press for being no more than little jacked up boxes, but they are decent if you are not too bothered about cornering hard etc.
Carwow did a youtube review of many of these, said they were all pretty good, and the Peugeot was the tester's favourite. My friend's lease is up this summer, and she will likely get another.

  • Thanks the Peugeot seems to be fairly reasonable second hand compared to some of the others. I'll have a read of a a few reviews.
