  • I was sharpening the pitchforks.

  • DnB

..is drum and bass stil a thing? Serious question; as in: is there still an active scene / people still putting out mixes with new stuff?

I was in the mood the other day and just searched YouTube for a bit, all I found was basically either very smooth ("liquid"), or really brutal stuff.

Guess what I'm looking for is something in between 😅

  • If you like the hospital records sound they are still releasing:

  • Check out Over/Shadow - that seems to be the best quality new stuff these days. The sort of clubby stuff, equivalent to what Bad Company, Ram Trilogy, Ed Rush & Optical etc used to be good at just sounds like utter jump up off kilter foghorn garbage these days. Take a look at what Andy C plays for example - https://www.instagram.com/reel/CqVu69cKPyq/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Because it’s so awful I don’t keep on top of that stuff at all. Other than Over/Shadow, the only new stuff I pay attention to is more breakbeat hardcore/jungle in sound, on labels like Deep Jungle and Good 2 Go.

  • Thanks for the quick replies guys! I appreciate it 🙂

Checking out the Over/Shadow releases right now - liking what I'm hearing so far 👍

  • I did a mix of (very techy) new stuff (with some old Source Direct) last year, if you like that sorta stuff - https://hearthis.at/theorie/cybertech/

  • Thanks, will check it out! ✌️

  • I asked on here 7 years ago what the benefits of Mastersounds weights were and there was a bit of audio quality chat, but after a month of using them the biggest thing for me is ehe extra control surface you get from the knurling around the top to really gently adjust speed when you're DJing. I'd never actually seen anyone using them like that til just before I got them.

  • It's this one, but yes it does feature that track.

Have a look at the other soopastole releases, Hot Grits is quite funny.

  • So, I have this, but it doesn’t appear to exist. I think the issue may be that the double sleeve was a promo item that came with the first instalment for those that wished to buy the second instalment and then speculate on its worth 15 years later, but it was not sold as both chapters together in a box. I dunno.

  • Sounds like no-one has ever created this version on discogs. It is a fairly simple thing to do if you have an account.

  • I just bought a mid-80s rega planar 3 as a first player. Bad/good choice? It was cheap and appears to be in great condition...

  • Great choice. I was given one last year and didn't have high hopes for it but it really turned my head around about Rega. The lightweight thing can be counterintuitive compared to most manufacturers but the sound quality is excellent at least the example I have is.

  • Good choice. I have a late 70s Planar 2, and it's great.

  • Nuts, just went to replace the cartridge on my Technics 1300 with a new VM95E and one of the headshell leads disintegrated. Taking a closer look the other 3 the connectors are all looking rough. At some point in my youth i've replaced the OG headshell with newer 1200 model that i think is legit but has some oxidisation on the coupling rubber washer and could still be a fake. Sadly i have no idea where the original headshell is now.

Given that i've just upgraded amp, cables and cartrdige would now be the time to replace the headshell? Or should i keep the 1200 headshell as it was working (no idea how well) and invest in something like these cables?

  • Got to reinforce this. @Mick and I went down there today, and if you like dance 12” you HAVE to take a trip there. Moving into bigger premises in the next few weeks. Feel like I might be going there frequently. Top guys running it and a great vibe in there - looking forward to their parties too.

Huge amounts of stuff not on their Discogs.

  • First time post in this thread. I have a collection of rather more than 1000 LP records to sell, all my own and dating as far back as the late 1960s. Lots are from the 1970s when I was a rock music journo and got stacks of free records.

I was into 'hi-fi' early and was always careful to treat them well. Over the last 30 years such of them as I have listened to have been played on my Linn LP12. So a good number, all those that I got new, are in near-perfect condition.

My impression, trawling though this thread, is that much of my collection is not in the period or of a genre sought by today's vinyl collectors — but that may reflect the LFGSS demographic.

My question to you fellers that know this market is, is it worth my while to catalogue them and put them up for sale through Discogs? I am not looking for top $, rather just to reduce stuff in prep for moving home.

  • Definitely worth your time, but it will take quite a lot it. I found when looking for or adding anything like Led Zeppelin, Genesis or Pink Floyd there can be hundreds of different versions of the same release and it takes time to find exactly which one you want/have.

If you’re in no rush it will still be worth the time to catalogue them all and work out which ones you are going to keep and instantly list the ones you want to sell. I found it quite enjoyable and cathartic to catalogue my collection. You get into a bit of a rhythm with it and can obviously listen to stuff you haven’t heard in a while while you do it.

If there’s any that are not worth that much that aren’t worth the effort to sell and post out individually, you could always set those aside and sell as a job lot on here, eBay or take them to a shop.

As a journo you’ve probably got some rare or unusual promos that could be worth quite a bit I’d imagine. Did they come with press releases/promo sheets that you kept?

Got any post-Waters era Floyd (especially singles)?

  • I'll second that, it is well worth cataloguing. When I discovered discogs I did 10-20 each evening, I really enjoyed the process.

Don't suppose you have any reggae or hip hop do you? @HarmanMogul

  • The only thing with discogs listing and selling is you have to be prepared with packaging material, postage labels and posting itself. You will also encounter disputes over postage/grading/pricing etc. which may or not be worth your time.

If you are selling rare copies of 70's rock they need to be completely accurately listed and graded to achieve proper pricing without get complaints. That as @J0nathan has mentioned is not always straighforward.

I started with 2,500 and now have over 3,000 so there's that to watch out for too. I sold 100's in boxes at a time and lots of individual valuable items too. It does depend on what you have to sell but I have a few hundred listed most of the time and sell 1 or 2 a week most of the time. It's easy to end up with a load that sell very slowly though.

Other people have thrown lists up here with a fixed price per disk and no individual grading and seem to have shifted a few.

  • I might be interested in the rock and new-wave stuff if you have any.

  • Eel Pie Records of Twickenham are having a small clearance online right now of new albums at just £10 if anyone's interested.
