  • My GF (not a confident cyclist, nor even a typical 'London cyclist') wants to cycle from her home in Mudchute to Peckham regularly. I used to do this route(ish) and know a couple of options.

    1. Go through the foot tunnel to Greenwich > Greenwich High Road > New Cross Rd > Queens Rd > Destination.
    2. Foot tunnel > Greenwich High Road > Brookmill Park > St Johns Vale > Past Lewisham college to Telegraph Hill > Kitto Road > Hollydale> Wiggle the backroads to Rye Lane.

Option 1 is too busy and scary for her. Option 2 is frankly too much of a hill given that she is a novice cyclist and has a ~20kg dutch bike.

Can anyone suggest a better option than simply telling her to tough it out and walk when the hill is too steep?

  • I used to go Brookmills Park >cross Brookmills Road > Admiral Street> Friendly Street (not as steep as Telegraph Hill) Wickham Road> Brockley Road> Braxfield Road> Howson Road>Dalrymple Road> Cross railway lines x 2>Turnham Road>Brockley Way>Ivydale Road>Cheltenham Road and she's on The Rye. With the exception of Brockley Road, the majority of that is on quiet / traffic free roads.

  • That's much appreciated. Thank you. Though it looks like it adds a fair distance to the route.

I shall present options to the committee and let her decide...
