Thanks, I'll try a local shop (Bristol based) but imagine that I'll just get told the shifters are irreparable and can only be replaced.

I fixed one of these the other week at my shop. Take the front cover off the shifter (you need a tiny security Torx, post a picture of the spring. I can then describe what to do from that.
