  • My Garmin wants to do some updates. I've connected it but it just gets stuck at 'Preparing Device for Software Updates' for hours on end. Anyone had this / any fix?

  • It does make some sense though - I'd want to know if I was going to meet a closed road!

If plotting for a later date I'd probably just plot as far as I could and make a note to edit closer to the date or plot the section separately in Basecamp or something.

  • Yeah, probably trying to download big maps. I had it shit the bed once years ago and contacted support. There's some temp folder it uses you need to clear out.

  • Snippet from their email:

Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10

Go to Computer or This PC
Open your Local Disk (C:) drive
    Go to ProgramData
    Open the Garmin folder
    Delete everything inside the folder
    Restart your computer

You can then reinstall Garmin Express to ensure you are using the latest version by following the steps below:

    Click http://download.garmin.com/omt/express/B/GarminExpressInstaller.exe
    Click Run
Accept the Terms and Conditions and click Install
    Click Launch

  • Thanks - that worked and was fairly painless.
It fell asleep in the middle but a restart got it going again.
    All updated now!

  • Finally got a new Garmin watch. Far better than my old fenix 3hr.

Ordered the 255 (not s) by accident but actually the size is good so ill keep it

The O2 saturation monitor doesn't always get a reading, so need to see about that being fenicaty. As I want to use that with altitude a lot.

  • Has anyone else got a Garmin Edge 520 Plus? I bought one on here secondhand and the battery seems rubbish compared to the Wahoo it's meant to replace. My Wahoo would happily last all day but the Garmin ran out after about 4/5 hours the other day, even with 30% screen brightness. Does this sound normal?

  • No it doesn't. It's old or dud

  • I have an edge 530. After last update, roads which used to be orange are now a blackish colour in the map when navigating, and the route is pink (used to be mostly orange roads with a purple route). Is there a way to change that back? I found the old colours more contrasting and easier to follow on screen

  • Has a different map been enabled? I found their new colours stupid too.
I've found disabling Trailforks and other maps (OSM or whatever) can help.
There's some options for map colours too, if you dig into the menus

  • Balls. I've definitely had it too long to take it up with the seller. I just wish Wahoo would get their shit together and sort out the software issue that's made my Bolt absolutely useless. I much prefer it to the Garmin when it's working.

  • Try replace it or contact Garmin? My 530 does 20h

  • It actually doesn't look too complicated from watching a YouTube video, maybe I'll give it a go.

  • Be super gentle when prizing the screen away from the housing.... it's way too easy to crack the screen.

  • Can confirm that this hack/bodge worked better for nav and tracking than all of the running watches on the Peak Divide this weekend. Would recommend for anyone who already has a cycling GPS and feels that another £500 for a less-good version of the same thing isn't great value for money

  • Hmm, I'm quite cack handed so maybe I'll see if I can get away with using a battery pack for now.

  • Didn't mean to scare you off... it's perfectly doable with a scalpel to cut through the adhesive before lifting. Just something to specially watch out for. Ask me how I know ;-)

Replacement LCD screens are £35-£40 on ebay.

  • I don’t think so, haven’t used any of those other things it just changed with the recent update I think.

Have managed to find some options in settings under activity profiles, but the ‘high contrast’ map theme option which I guess used to be the default, seems to have changed to these new colours, still not too keen

  • I'm sure I had the same thing but I can't find mention of it in this thread at least. it's not the first time we've whinged about their colour choices.

  • Top tip! I've ordered a replacement battery and mini tool kit. Will give it a go and report back.

  • Garmin Edge 540 & 840 (+Solar variants) supposedly being released today.

  • No but I have an 820 and the battery is useless.

  • Anyone still after those 255 and 255s Foreunners discussed upthread.. they are £40 off plus another 10% here if using the EASTER code today (I have used them before)..

  • In case anyone else noticed an issue with RWGPS yesterday.

"I'm sorry to hear that your route maps are not showing properly in your events. It looks like an update we made on the web site earlier today is causing this problem. Our web team is working to fix this issue so that your route maps appear correctly on your event pages. We should have this updated a bit later today. I'll send you a follow up message as soon as I hear from the web team about this."

  • Are bike computers for navigation worth it?
I haven't ever had a computer with mapping, and my Garmin 500 died finally.
Would be mostly for weekend riding and a bit of bikepacking from time to time, and while I'm usually riding with other people with navigation devices, I need to start taking responsibility and lead more.
I'm vaguely looking at Garmin 840 or wahoo roam v2, but it's a lot of money for a bit of battery saving over a quadlock and my phone.
I don't care about power or fancy features.
If people use phones, what apps do you use and how much do they cane your battery?
