  • Who is good for pet insurance?

Just had to take Cannoli to the vet, he's had his ear sliced in half in a fight, needs surgery £350 approx....

  • PetPlan, they are a bit expensive, but I have made 3 claims in the last few years - 2 tooth removal and 1 ultrasound scan for vomiting. All 3 claims got paid within a week. They don't increase your premium because you have made a claim. I was with John Lewis before, made a claim for less than £500 and they increased the premium more than double.

You should look for the underwriters and read reviews of them instead of which company. Also, don't be fooled by the initial cheap premium, once you have made a claim of any kind, however small the amount, most insurers wouldn't allow to you increase the premium/swap to a more expensive plan.

So I currently pay around £35 a month for the most comprehensive plan for Patch with a yearly max payout of £12k. She is 11, as she gets older, I might consider changing to a cheaper plan as the older they get, the less likely vets would recommend expensive treatment. That said, I am quite comfortable paying around £35 a month, so will keep paying for as long as I can afford it. I think in the last 6 years or, PetPlan has only increase less than £5 in total.
