You can get kits from Halfords etc that will give you all of the additional accessories you need to tick the legal boxes for driving in France - hi viz, warning triangle, light beam deflectors etc. You'll also have to pay a lot in tolls, unless you can take the time to avoid motorways. I've driven from one end of France to the other quite a few times and the cost of tolls wasn't far off the cost of fuel.
Your insurance should cover you, your breakdown cover might not!
