  • Hello residents of this forum.

After two punctures in two training rides, coupled with a heavy workload and limited free time, I've decided to bite the bullet and get an indoor trainer.

I don't need it to be smart in any way or sync up with any device. I train using HR on my Garmin and that's it. No Zwift or Strava or Trianing Peaks or anything like that.

I do some 'spiky' sessions for cross in the winter, and some more sustained efforts for (10 mile) TTs in the summer, and rarely train for more than 90 mins at a time.

So Ive narrowed my choices down to rollers or a 'dumb' (wheel on?) turbo trainer. I think I'd prefer something I can sling my only road bike on and off with as little fuss as possible. And does anyone have any recommendations that aren't ridiculously expensive?

  • Nice to see you.

I find rollers a bit more stimulating than a dumb trainer, mainly because you have to think a little on maintaining your balance. These are fine and so cheap it's comical.

The only drawback I've found is that for really high end sprint type efforts, I bounce around a bit much on the rollers, but if you can stay seated and spin a very high gear you can control it. For most cross specific training, i.e. VO2 max efforts, they are fine.

  • I've got something like this (without the speed sensor) https://www.wiggle.co.uk/tacx-boost-turbo-trainer-bundle and its totally fine. it's very easy to set up and put away. I thought it would eat tyres but it really doesn't. the lever on the clamp got a bit sticky but a bit of chain lube sorted it out and I've had no other problems.

I also got a set of rollers but I'm rubbish at them and find it very stressful. I should really sell them.

  • I still need to get rid of my old Computrainer. Everyone laughs but when lockdown happened and trainers were in high demand I was loving it. You can run it with Trainerroad using their legacy app just fine and it did work with Zwift once upon a time but who knows now. Special price for you ;)

Also have a Cyclops JetFluid that is a nice wheel on trainer that I only really use for TT warmups and since I'm doing basically zero TTing again I probably should get rid of.
