Fuck me, the price of inner tubes!

  • The idea was to build proper bomb proof tyre that can handle anything. Which would have worked if it didn't destroy itself from the inside.
I am going to put some marathon tyres back on but they are not as reliable long term and don't protect from tacks or screws.

  • Ah remember when we put old tires inside new tires to stop skidding through them, bring back 2006.

  • Are you regularly riding through building sites or something? I ran Marathons Plus for ages on the fixed and must've hit one thing (a nail) in years that actually went through those tyres. They were squared off but still rolling by the time I decided to move on to something a bit less "tractor"

  • You mean, 1986.

  • Saw a francis cade video the other day where, instead of an inner tube, he used a 20mm tubular tyre. Looked pretty robust, yet I imagine rides horribly.

  • I got a massive puncture in the first 2km of riding on a marathon plus once, I was so pissed.

  • all right old man

  • I would call them destruction sites, but large parts in North Greenwich are building sites. There is just always some shit on the paths on top of the regular coverage of broken glass.

  • Fair. Mine was only road-use. I hate bike paths / stab alleys.

  • According to some old film I saw about mentals wrestling wildlife in Africa they did that to stop acacia thorn punctures while terrorising beasts on Safari.

  • finally took the tyre off and this is how the damage looks on the inside.
The insert had fused with the rubber a bit but there were no large flakes like at the front.

  • Has anyone tried these slime inner tubes, do they work?

    https://www.wiggle.co.uk/slime-inner-tube

  • I bought some bontrager versions in France as it's all the shop had. They weigh a ton. Can't comment on the reliability I would guess you can achieve the same squirting some tubeless gunk into a regular inner tube with a removable valve core. I have done this before on an MTB and didn't get any punctures but no way of telling if there's any link.

  • Thanks for the reply, I wondered if weight would be an issue.

I got a mountain bike recently and punctures are my biggest worry, the tyres are Kenda Regio. The other option is going Marathon Plus.

  • They do, touring cyclist do swear by them.

Not a tube if you wanted the best performance, weight yada yada, but it work.

  • Have used them for at least a couple of years, recommend

  • Thanks all, I’ll give them a go.

  • I got a puncture a few weeks ago, and It was wet and muddy and horrible.

So I decided to try those new tubolito X tour inners, that come with a 1 year guarantee. £22 each is expensive, but I thought for a year of not worrying much on tours etc it's good peace of mind.

Put them in two days later the one in the rear ruptured in the kitchen randomly with a loud bang, only at 40psi. Did the warranty, got a replacement. The other original one on the front has now punctured, a week later.

I've now got two punctured ones (one not repairable as it's on the join, other one possibily repairable, but I don't want to spend another £5 on a patch kit), one replacement not fitted, and another warranty one in progress.....

Think I'm going back to normal inners... Could have got eight of them for the same price.

Thanks for coming to my tubolito tedtalk etc

  • They’re shit. We got excited in the workshop and ordered a bunch. First two colleague fitted instantly popped. We joked about his skill.
Other colleague fit one. Next day down.

I fit one, it popped. All this at low pressure.
Pirelli’s offering is a bit sturdier but no better.

  • I tried to use a Schwalbe one after a tubeless puncture and snapped the brittle plastic (why!) valve while pumping. I was not impressed.

  • They need a perfect tyres/rims combo which is what I found, Brompton higher end model come standard with them and got swapped.

I did get excited by them, then I swap to tubeless.

  • Does anyone know if they can be recycled? If not, then I guess they'll make good ties for planting trees etc.

  • I highly doubt it!

  • Yeah I know. Still doesn’t stop them from being shit.

Let those tubes be nothing but a bad memory of stupid innovations. Better for everyone and the planet.
At least your can recycle standard tubes.
