Hey so I did the thing where I have too many bikes/projects on the go, so thought I'd make a post about it here to keep me on track chasing that dragon of the perfect bike quiver that we all dream about.
Some context first ey, I am a 32yo sometimes social worker sometimes goat herd sometimes gardener and full time bike addict. I live on the southern coast of South Australia (Kaurna country) close to the beach and a river and loads of national parks and trails so consider myself lucky with riding options.
Given all that I still mostly ride only when I have to, which is 3 times a week to my social work job which is a 7km mixed terrain jaunt and various local trips. So hoping to get back into the fun side of riding as well.
After going full wanker mode a few years ago, with age and competing budgetary constraints I now tend towards Functional Bikes and sub-wanker builds.
I am allowing myself 3 bikes (anymore is clutter and too much hassle imo) and I currently have 6 (I think?) in various states of (dis)repair that fit into the three vibes I wish to curate.
I am currently thinking:
Bike 1: Road focused do it all bike - currently a Jamis Coda Sport, which does the job well, but had the rear wheel buckled for a while so haven't been riding it much. In the meantime I bought a Merida Crossway off marketplace and damned if it's not a comfy ride appealing to my increasingly middle aged sensibilities. Probably the Coda will stick around though I do love Hydro disks.
Bike 2: Offroad focused bike that can also do stuff - a vintage MTB obvs. I have had a Shogun Trailbreaker lingering in my shed for a while that I've been meaning to build up, but also recently got a 98 Hardrock A1 for $100 and Poppi says Aluminium is cool now? So tossing up which to build up
Bike 3: City bike/lightweight basket rig - (yes all 3 bikes will have front baskets) - Also have two competing builds for this slot, a cool fluro retro roadie that I would build up as an RGR type and a shitty chain store 3spd fixie I bought on clearance and can't seem to flog on marketplace without taking a significant loss. Soooo who knows.
Anyways a lot of talking without any pics, here are some previous projects (all moved on now) to whet your appetite
My old Cross Check, which was slick, but hated the tiny headtube and necessary spacer tower.
One of my old Shogun Builds, probably peaked FBNPNA right there, but still sold it after getting bored.
GT Beer Bike/Beater
A belt drive commuter which tickled my dorky commuter cyclist side well, too bad Nexus 8 hubs are trash
Previous Bianchi Dadbike - not a bad rig but probs a bit small for me and felt weird riding so high up with huge stem and bars
