  • Please bore it out to fit Weber Core burrs (then tell me if it worked)

Hope it's as good as advertised! It does look very promising!

  • Thanks for the suggestions and input re BtC machines.

I do actually have an espresso grinder (Ascaso i-mini I think) that is sitting unused in a cupboard.

For ~£300, should I be looking at an Espresso machine with steam wand (I want it for flat whites more than straight shots) rather than a bean to cup machine for similar money?

(Apologies for asking basically the same question again)

  • I'd vote for an espresso machine. For that money you should be able to grab a Gaggia Classic already PID'd and throw in an ISM basket.

Once you get the setup dialled in it really isn't too much of a faff in my experience, the grinding being by far the bigger time consumer for me since I'm hand grinding. Quick pass with a distribution tool/cocktail stick, tamper and go. Frothing milk (I mostly have cappucinos myself) isn't much of a time consumer either.

I think in very little time you'll get much better results than a B2C machine and for me the little procedure (again, not a time consuming one if you have an electric grinder, really) is part of the pleasure!

  • Looks super interesting, and the 64s despite being lower power etc could be a very good fit for my setup since I don't have a lot of counter space and quite honestly wouldn't spend more than the £250 it's going for now for a grinder given my 1zpresso does work very well... Then again, that would mean I'd have to pull the trigger now while it does cost that much, doesn't it? 😂

    Decisions decisions....

  • Depends if you want to get in to making espresso milk drinks. Since WFH I’ve used mine loads and gotten into it but before that not so much. Also my wife doesn’t use it, so you may have to be prepared to be the resident barista. If you want another hobby get the espresso machine, if you want decent and easy coffee at home then bean to cup

  • Makes sense. I don't think LadyDeth wants to get in to it, but it was her suggestion to get an espresso machine, so maybe she fancies a new hobby

  • Both of our frank green ones have a dead weird smell that puts me off using them (although it doesn’t seem to affect taste), despite repeated scrubbing, much prefer the Stanley one I was gifted tbh.

    That multibev looks great tho.
My brother and my wife have the camelback Horizon tumblers and really rate them.

  • When FG says ‘ceramic lined’ is that the same kind of thing that so-called ceramic fry pans use? It’s a silicone-based coating that has not been as extensively tested as teflon.

  • I picked up a Hario Muzidashi coffee pot. What is the consensus on beans for cold brew? Just use my usual beans (filter use only) or is this a scenario where the longer brew time means that nicer beans make less of a difference?

  • I use the same filter beans but ground a bit coarser

  • Ta. I only use a clever dripper so I will start with my current grind settings and work my way up.

Are you up in Yorkshire now? Mostly I buy from Limini these days and I can recommend them if you are looking for something more local to you.

  • I'm in Manchester now, although closer to Yorkshire so still good. I really like the beans from Ancoats Coffee Co, local to me now but I was buying from them before too. I'll give Limini a try.

  • Oooh this could be a shout actually... would work well, been mulling it over and might just get a lightweight mug for aeropress outside situs!

  • This actually seems great - been a big proponent of Camelbak for time. Unsure if they'll fit in the bottle cage, but at worst I'll steal back my manything from my partner/whack it in the basket.

  • scenario where the longer brew time means that nicer beans make less of a difference?

At the risk of getting expelled from the thread, I did exactly this. When I was going into the office I'd have a pot brewing some some pre-ground Taylor's coffee that I bought in the local Tesco.

Cold brew tends to smooth off any particularly interesting flavours IMO so for me I'd be wary of 'wasting' great beans on it. I think I was using 32g/500ml (which was gone by 10:15) so was getting through coffee pretty quick too.

  • I'll take one home from the office and check tonight - Pics to follow!

  • Hario say grind fine.
I found grinding super coarse better.
I use it for cheaper medium roast beans to ramp up the sweetness out of them with minimal harshness. Fancier beans I'd do a v60 over ice cubes.

  • Also, speaking of filter, saw that youtuber Filter 3.0 vid and it makes me want to dimmer mod the Gaggia. Then I think I might as well do the whole Arduino controller thing. I'm gonna have ebayed a Decent by the end of the week aren't I...

  • the higher quantities does get through beans quickly, at least it should last longer if you make it strong then water it down after. I can't remember exactly what weight I was doing before but I've made some incredible tasting cold brews when under dosing and doing a shorter steep, like 20g-25g/500ml then 4-6 hours brew. Had some yirgacheffe style beans that were more like a coffee-tea, really floral, sweet etc. Very hard to replicate exactly though.

  • Not the same brand, but I've used my chillys bottle a couple times and the taste seems to stick. used it before for squash / electrolytes and the taste never leaves...something odd about it

  • bikeinn had one for 25 quid (+ 7 shipping) in a semi fetching sandy colour - will report back.

seems like a great option as well for having a bigger cup than a lot of in built cups, which will be good for aeropress etc situations...

  • After binning the idea of the Timemore 078s as being too much money a week ago, I've now got an 83mm hand grinder sitting in my basket for literally double the price. I take it back.

  • It's that a Weber or similar?

  • Yeah, Craig Lyn's HG-1 Prime. There were a million justifications (same price as a locally sourced Niche! Well, without shipping and tax...) but I think that moment of madness has passed now. It definitely helped reframe the value of the Timemore though.

  • Turns out it is pretty punchy! I had some from another vendor, but must have been roasted quite differently. Will try blending it. I mentioned in the shop that I knew it wasn’t to everyone’s taste and he agreed, but pointed out it was on the milder end of the dark roasts. Wild.
