What time is it? Watches and horology

Visiting my nephew by marriage - he’s under 30 and has a tidy collection, here’s the first (and yes, collection may be tidy but there’s some over excitement with the date)

It can be tough to tell as there are various levels of fake out there. You can pay £20 for one or £200+ for one. That’s a £20 one.

Oh my, they told me they bought it 6 years ago from an AD (and not having seen one up close I took it at face value)!!!

What are the obvious giveaways?

The junction of the red and blue on the bezel too.

GMT hand below the hour hand is an instant one even before the end links being on basically sideways.

That's your first giveaway, the steel Pepsi wasn't released until 2018.

It's wrong everywhere, but the most obvious thing is bracelet end link. The case is soft and the wrong shape. The bezel looks like plastic rather than ceramic and isn't aligned properly. The GMT hand is the wrong shape and the red paint doesn't go all the way to the triangle. The crown is too tall. And the engraved text on the rehaut should align with the minute markers. And everything else, but those are the most obvious things.

Are the GMT hand and hour hand actually independent?

It’s interesting that, with all those errors / lack of quality, it looks like they’ve included the etched crown on the glass.

Oh shoot, I thought the GMT hand was just bottom of the hand stack and photo quality obscuring it but is it just one long hand?

I’m keen to see it too (and will be looking with a beadier eye!!)

The numbers part of the ceramic GMT bezel is platinum, it has a very fine texture. It's not tippex applied by child labour. If he believes he's got the real thing there it might be fun to play along.
