  • Thanks for the suggestions and input re BtC machines.

I do actually have an espresso grinder (Ascaso i-mini I think) that is sitting unused in a cupboard.

For ~£300, should I be looking at an Espresso machine with steam wand (I want it for flat whites more than straight shots) rather than a bean to cup machine for similar money?

(Apologies for asking basically the same question again)

  • I'd vote for an espresso machine. For that money you should be able to grab a Gaggia Classic already PID'd and throw in an ISM basket.

Once you get the setup dialled in it really isn't too much of a faff in my experience, the grinding being by far the bigger time consumer for me since I'm hand grinding. Quick pass with a distribution tool/cocktail stick, tamper and go. Frothing milk (I mostly have cappucinos myself) isn't much of a time consumer either.

I think in very little time you'll get much better results than a B2C machine and for me the little procedure (again, not a time consuming one if you have an electric grinder, really) is part of the pleasure!

  • Depends if you want to get in to making espresso milk drinks. Since WFH I’ve used mine loads and gotten into it but before that not so much. Also my wife doesn’t use it, so you may have to be prepared to be the resident barista. If you want another hobby get the espresso machine, if you want decent and easy coffee at home then bean to cup
