  • We tell that to customers all the time, it’s a risk. Touch wood it’s ok most of the time! Most just go for and don’t worry

I’ve done it twice but it’s expensive to do it that way, does keep the dirty side dirty and the new stuff clean.

  • All looking very suave, including examining man.

Who's doing the construction site management? The architects? Or you have a general contractor, or third party?

The kitchen is IKEA with custom fronts?

I'ld love (architect) to do a project like this sometime, to live vicariously through people that chose a lucrative profession and design it from a-z.

My current (since Jan. '19...) is a quite big office building and I just can't be on top of everything which is frustrating.

  • since Jan. '19

Blimey! Are you the project lead?

  • Yes.
Been there from the beginning, hard learning with no experience in real construction.
The plus and downside of being in a small office.
Project should be done by the end of the year though, and come two months our job is mostly done bar some construction site tweaks and last material selections.

  • It’s a design + build company - so they take you through the whole process from feasibility study. There’s deffo been points at which I’ve had gripes with the process but overall we’ve found it really stress free. The standard of the work is really impressive and they really care about what they’re doing which is nice. I’m sure this is also possible in more traditional processes where you tender our to contractors too. You pay a premium I think either way for a ‘turnkey’ solution but with a young child and two busy jobs it was always going to be better this way.
I’ll do a full write up or a thread of its own at some point if people would find it useful.

Yes most of the cabinetry is ikea with custom fronts, we’re having quite a lot of it built so this was a way to keep costs down. With nice Blum ironmongery and someone who cares building them they feel nice but clearly there is a difference between these and solid bespoke kitchens.

  • Anyone make particularly nice toilet roll holders? Or just get matching ones from lusso stone?

  • If you fancied a wood stove but don't want cancer - a forum approved alternative is an Everhot electric stove. They look nice, its warm, good thermal mass and you can even toast/cook stuff in it like a proper stove.

  • I thought the Vola ones were pricey!

  • Crosswater stuff is well made and looks nice.
I've been impressed with finishing of Lusso Stone stuff but can't speak to quality long term.
I mentioned a brand called Vema which I think @andos and @chrisbmx116 bought some bits from. I'd seen them in a hotel room and they felt well made.

  • we bought crosswater taps and shower etc but the victoria plumb brushed brass bog roll holder for 1/3 of the price is of similar quality.
you could probably get something cast in solid bronze in birmingham/sheffield for mega money but it’s unlikely to look much different just need bigger fixings for the heft.

  • We've gone for Coal brook in bathroom and kitchen. Comes in a range of good quality finishes and not too pricey

  • Yep!

It was Vema tibre, pretty much replicas of Arte Forme or Vola scale wise (slightly smaller than Crosswater and Lussostone).

They claim to be Italian made but are almost defo not, although they do have an office there (EC1 Bathrooms did some digging while I was in there once and the Crosswater rep had seen it).

Look nice, and v similar to ones 4 times the price, can't comment on mechanical quality, but since child and cozzie livvie im on the povo train so needs must.

  • Nice!
I would go for stainless screws though.

  • Ok, yeah sounds like the best and as free of stress possible solution. But of course, that comes at a premium.
They do nice stuff, and as said, at this scale it's manageable. They probably have a shortlist of contractors they work with so they know who they're bringing in.

Nowt wrong with IKEA hacking, also kitchenwise. All the hardware is good and proven. I've been looking at companies that do "custom" off the shelf solutions for IKEA hardware, but of course a carpenter can work with it too.

  • Yeah this was the Vema tap I was looking at which think looks great

  • Yeah the screws in photo are pretty basic. Black drywall screw would work better

  • So, a storage heater?

  • Yah. But posh, and you can bake a potato in it.

  • crosswater look similar and come with 2 spout lengths and spares should you need them are readily available.

  • @user67526 I went with the Vema Tiber taps that @Tenderloin mentioned. Went for surface mount with the sink and same range for shower - I changed the head to a stainless steel crosswater though as the shower head was a weird skinny pencil thing.

I rate the quality but then I think my standards are pretty basic. It's a tap, its look good and it was ok value so ticked all the boxes for me.

Came direct from our bathroom fitter's supplier so he charged me trade prices (forwarded me the supplier invoice). Think it was about £150+ VAT

  • Looking for a low projection wall hung basin for a cloakroom wc - any suggestions from the hive mind?

  • @Tenderloin
