Preorders for the M8 tracker just opened up.

Anyone here record guitars into their tracks? About to start and was looking to see what other people's setups were like. I'm guessing recording dry is the way to go with applying effects afterwards? But I can see it still being very useful (almost necessary) to hear the post-effects audio while playing along.

I was planning on splitting the guitar signal, one part going into the interface for recording dry, the other going through the pedal setup and being mixed with the current track playback. This sounds good in theory but I can imagine there's probably some things I've overlooked.

Alternatively (and much more simply), I could record the dry signal in and have some lightweight effects applied in realtime so I can listen to a similar sound. Then go back and apply full effects post recording?

Tangentially, the audio interface I'm picking up comes with licences for Guitar Rig LE & Ableton Live Lite so give me a shout if you want either of those. Think with Guitar Rig LE you get a discount on the full version if you have the lite version so might be useful if anyone's looking to make some savings there.

It maybe depends how analogue you want to be with the guitar signal processing (do you want to use amp emulations and cab sims, in the box effects, etc). If you want to use a valve amp you'll need a load box or something similar to get the amped output into the computer.

A lot of interfaces will have a "Hi-Z" input for taking an unamplified guitar signal. If you don't have that then you'll probably at least want a pre-amp of some kind.

Grabbing the un-amped/un-effected signal is definitely a good idea - you can use a simple splitter pedal to do that, for sure. If you wanted to you can use a reamper box like a Radial to play with effects after you've recorded your take.

No analog processing on my end of any kind (it'll either be going through Guitar Lab or my multi-effects pedal so any amp/cab stuff will be simulated) which simplifies matters at least.

Will have a look at those reamper boxes, still on the fence as to whether to do processing through the pedal on in the DAW.

The interface I'm getting (Arturia Minifuse2) can handle both mic & line instrument level inputs so hoping there'll be no need for an additional pre-amp.

Guitar input is not the same as mic input because of the impedance difference:

A hi-Z input is high impedance which is what the guitar requires for the best sound quality. A DI box or guitar preamp will ideally take the high impedance input and provide a low impedance output, eg on XLR, which you can send into the interface.

Looks like the Minifuse has a switch to toggle between mic & instrument level so hopefully should be fine without a DI box/preamp. But will do a bit more reading up on it before putting it all together. Thanks again!

It’s a weird concept but impedance isn’t the same as “level” - you’ll get a signal coming through if you have it set to mic level but it won’t be optimal.

Just had a read through that article there (thanks very much again!). Audio engineering speak is even more baffling than the music theory side of things to me at the moment! It looks like the Minifuse will be alright with its 1MΩ impedance (at least with my 10 minutes of experience on this subject...), fingers crossed!

oh I know. I'm looking into getting a better Norns ( i currently have one with the noisiest inputs known to man) so i can have a smaller, self contained instrument that i can still play with. i also have monotrons and a NTS-1 that allow me to play with things when i do get the time

At least you will still have some toys! I have been through this and out the other side. There are so many things I regret selling (but to be fair the money was bloody handy when the kids were small). Typically most of the stuff I sold appreciated and I have bought back at a higher price years later.

to be honest with myself the eurorack thing is great but i always fall into the "this new module will be everything i need" rather than actually learning/using/making the most of the modules i already have. it seems more of a collection than a functioning instrument
