Montane seemed like a good bet to me
Any thoughts on these?

I feel ya, I was working outside today all day too, stationary and layered up so managed OK but I'm pretty used to wearing almost the right amount of stuff.

I had liners under my winter gloves at first, then replaced the liners with my thicker secondary winter gloves, and my hands were still fucked as everything was completely soaked by midday.

Gave up and found a set of these:

in the right size for £50 - exact same as my old ones I was replacing after they got nicked, maybe not super optimum or the best choice but I got sick of looking and they did they job. -

It was pretty dry up here mostly, and obviously we're all northern and dead'ard, I also had semi cover in the worst of the sleet/snow and only had about 4 miles to ride when I did have to travel so got away with many layers for the standing around. I've had enough days like yours sounds like to feel bad for you and glad I don't do it often though.

I expect you may already own one, but hand warmers ftw. Don’t get the cheapest £13 ones online, they suck. Zippo do a good one but it’s refillable instead of rechargeable, and £££.

Brutal! I wasn't outside for anywhere near as long as that but still ended up having a raynauds nightmare. My hands were still painful when I went to bed 8 hours later. I feel for you being out for 9 hours!

It's tough to ignore the temptation to warm up your hands quickly with dryers or radiator or something but it's not great for you, you can burst little blood vessels as they swell and warm up and you'll have itchy painful red hands for a week afterwards

Thought about getting battery heated vest?

o rly? did not know that.

Oh these look neat. Do they make you stink though?

I am officially endorsing the Sealskinz lobster gloves. Been using them loads recently and they've kept my raynaudsy hands warm and dry. They're not great with drop bars but work great with flats/risers.

My body is fine. My PHD down jacket does its thing there. It's the hands that suffer.

My thinking was that if you're core is super warm it will want to dump that heat, via your hands.

When I was outside a few months back and it was -5 or whatever I went even more overkill, double base layers top and bottom plus a gilet over what I was wearing yesterday, it does seem to help as I've been much worse off in the past as far as cold feet go when it wasn't as cold. Flask of tea and a rechargeable hand warmer running in my pocket was helpful to bring hands back to just cold every time they dipped to bloody cold.

I have five, sometimes six layers on top, plus buff, and two hoods up. Any more and I won't be able to reach the bars 😂

Ha, I take most of that off to ride or I overheat, but like I said I'm generally riding short distances on a heavy bike then standing around touching cold things. I think my hands would get cold and wet riding further, just had Montane primaloft gloves for the riding parts, I've got some cheapo lobster things for colder but forgot them on the really cold day and kinda regretted it.

Do you use bar mitts as well? I really recommend them with a decent pair of gloves.
-
• #2621
The problem I have with with bar mitts for courier work (which I'm pretty sure is BRP's use case) is that your hands are in and out so often. You don't really have the chance to build up and maintain that toasty microclimate. Before I bought the lobster gloves I used them on my commuter and they were great for that, only taking my hands out for a few seconds at a time to indicate etc.
Edit: actually I think BRP and I have had this exact conversation before and he (quite rightfully) get over the dork factor!

I think I'd also find them a pain in the ass with a Rohloff shifter.

• #2623
It's not too bad actually!

Not that I’ve been able to tell on myself or others that I know use it for Dr Bike work.

I’m also a courier. I see them as an extra barrier against wind/rain/snow. So your gloves aren’t exposed to the cold air when riding.
They can be a hindrance at times when needing to check your phone/radio while riding and you need to grab your brakes.
I know what you mean about them needing time to build up a micro climate though!
Oh ffs. Back to the drawing board then. Thought I’d done quite a good job of whittling down my list and arriving at those!
