  • Haha, Chalet Pagoda? Right up my street that, saved as inspiration for when we have the funds to rebuild our place.

  • I used the same folk, the architect used to sweep up every day...

  • Haha yeah, only ever once popped in for an un-announced surprise site inspection but was still neat and tidy

  • If the architect was there sweeping up regularly I'd probably be tempted to say you don't need to be here mate - let the £100 a day labourer do the sweeping up and you go back to clerkenwell in your Saab(and don't send me a bill for your services today either).

    But that's just me...

  • The labourers were defo not £100 a day...

(Site visits were regular and he was actually a carpenter too so was building the cabinetry)

  • Speaking of cross-over careers, chatting to the decorator yesterday it turns out he’s actually a sculptor whose work we’ve admired in the past.

  • Oh, name please!
He might do a good job as decorator too with those skills.

  • I used a plasterer once that was also sculptor. Based on the finish of the wall when he was done, his art is likely bumpier than that 😔

  • Mild exaggeration, only one bit was disappointing. But even bad London plasterers seem to be better than most of the guys we've found round here in the provinces so far.

  • Odd - I know a few great plasterers in Norfolk and the standard in London has been so-so. Luckily the guys that have just done our place were great though.

  • Oooh you're at decorating stage too?

  • Dominic McHenry, though I don’t think he’s for hire as a decorator, more a favour for our site manager, his friend.

Please don’t ask him about decorating jobs on instagram or something 🤪

  • He could do Berlin gallery Weekend and help with my kitchen?

  • The guy who did my kitchen is the bass player from Ishmael Ensemble.

  • The guy who block paved my drive also does naked gardening.

  • Does anyone have any recommendations for resin-bound gravel? Relatively small area, London based.

  • Should we ask how you know? Were you happy with the service?

  • does anyone have experience of screw piles for a house extension vs block and beam?

  • Masking tape off the joists at the end of the day. Stoaked. Loads of snagging But we’re getting there.

  • Electrician has been chasing in the ceiling to move light fittings into the middle of the room (why did they put the rose near the window when built?) had to go into the concrete a few mm once through the plaster.
Must be a really hard mix with plenty of aggregate as 2 broken SDS bits:

Enhanced privacy. Something like if you have the curtains open and net curtains then at night you can't be seen if you are not between the window and the light.

  • Ah could be, one of those odd hangovers from Victorian modesty like doors opening the wrong way into rooms so if a lady was disturbed by someone entering they would be hidden behind the door so as to not see any naked flesh.
Back gardens are so long because it was deemed an appropriate distance to not see a woman’s nipple through a white blouse from the dwelling opposite.

  • Oooh nice - two questions - 1 what blocks - 2 is that Doug fir or Standard joists ?

    1. Can’t remember in the end, they were supposed to be smooth but we ended up with these ridged ones, they’ve really grown on me.

    2. English larch. I was expecting more straw-yellow and brown tones but realise now I’ve always had Siberian larch in the workshop which looks quite different. They basically look identical to doug fir. Had to call the sawmill to confirm they’d send the right timber.
