  • These are amazing..

  • They were both from Shapeways:

    AMPro transmission brace: https://www.shapeways.com/product/G72GAY3NL/transmission-brace-for-tamiya-rc-cw01-lunchbox

    Chassis brace: https://www.shapeways.com/product/E3R2ZC2JL/cw01-chassis-brace-front-lunchbox

They're both a bit spennier than they should have been, and in retrospect I could have made a stiffer chassis brace from a bit of alu, but I was getting some other stuff at the same time (and getting carried away!).

You need to remove the springs from the rear axle mount when you fix the transmission brace.

  • The nostalgia I hold for Tamiya rc cars is crazy. I remember being taken to Hamleys by my nan when I was 8 or 9 and lusting over the cars there.

We didn't have the money to get an actual RC car back then, but I did leave with the 1989 Tamiya radio control guide book - https://tamiyabase.com/guidebooks/35-1989

I loved that book, I don't think I've ever been so captivated by a book in all my life! I could easily just look at the Avante pages for hours. I'm tempted to get another copy from eBay - just seeing a few pages from it is eliciting some wonderful childhood memories!

  • I used to love the catalogue you could get, I used to browse that over and over again

  • Same - there was someone at school that had one, and we used to spend lunchtimes crowded round a table with it in the middle.

I remember my mate down the road and me pouring over his copy as well. I don't think it was the one above, I remember it had a Clodbuster and Egress in it as well .

  • I’m up to the painting stage on this Lunchbox…

I’ll spray the “metal” parts in TS-30 and with a light dusting of TS-6 to get a bit of a tarnished look.

And I plan to clear coat everything once the decals are on.

  • Good work - did you also have a mini-stress at the unused spare cog? I spent at least and hour reading the instructions before I reassured myself I hadn't missed anything!

  • Haha, I did! I read the instructions over and over because it’s a very oddly specific part to have sitting there unused!

It’s not listed in the total parts list, so I’m not really sure what the deal is there.

  • Plz to be sharing build photos.

  • Yours looks great as well, btw!

  • Thanks to @christianSpaceman for the servo we got this done ! have ordered a brace to stop the hopping. I grab some pics of it when I get a minute. Highly recommended as a build with a 10yo kid. Perfect level. But get JIS screwdrivers !

  • Started painting yesterday. Changed plans…

Chrome work will be matte black
Wheels will be chromed (Tamiya Silver Leaf aircraft paint).

Need a couple more coats when the weather is better (my paint booth - a cardboard box - is outside).

  • Sounds good! I used a carboard box in the kitchen, which other than fumigating myself, also allowed for some dust...

It was suggested to me to use black as a primer for the metal paints, rather than the usual white/grey fine primer

  • I have put both on without a primer and they have gone on wonderfully.

  • #metoo

Hence the resurgence. (For my kids honest)

    *New boots.

  • Some recent helmetry.

  • Very cool. Very neat. Your paint skills are something else.

I saw a few photos and a build video of the Avante. And now I WANT. This is my problem with hobbies... it has to be a full stainless exhaust, it has to be Dura Ace, and now it has to be the Avante.

In all seriousness, the build looks very involved compared to the cheaper models which seem to have a lot of items pre-built or pre-painted. It's the reason I went for the Lunchbox - not too pricey for the first adult venture back into RC and a reasonably involved build process.

Is there any way of knowing what's required - assembly-wise - for each Tamiya kit?

Eg. the Rising Fighter comes with a pre-assembled gearbox.

  • Egress is the best retro build. Because you can actually drive it, unlike the Avante which is a dogs dinner to pilot. It's a nice thing to look at though.

  • That's some welcome knowledge. Thanks!

  • Fuck all spares availability for both, too.

Only the TD2/TD4 and TT02B buggies have any support for them, and they are all a bit sad compared to the OG and TRF stuff.

  • Sounds like you had a ding? :o

  • Don't think mine did. There were a lot of cogs etc . Surely manuals are online ?https://usermanual.wiki/Document/tamiyarisingfightermanual.1472891499/view

  • DB01 is the one.
