If I’m getting a filter coffee machine is there any reason to not get a technivorm? Watched the Hoffman review and do like the look of the Wilfa…

Hidden in a cupboard: Sage
On show: MoccamasterTechnivorm over function
-
• #23804
Will be in a cupboard probs but The Hoff didn't love the Sage. Moccamaster, glass or thermal caraffe?
-
• #23805
thermal, but get the new design (boxier and comes with a cap to seal it up rather than just the brew through spout).
-
• #23806
oooh new jug ! niiiice
-
• #23807
Oh I thought Hoff was all over the Sage
-
• #23808
yeah, thought he picked it over the Technivorm or Wilfa

Yeah I got my Sage Precision Brewer on the strength of Hoff's review. I can really recommend it, the auto start function is brilliant and the thermal carafe keeps the coffee hot until elevensies at least, but at lunch it's more warm than hot.
Things I've noticed:
I use around 65g/L so 900ml/58.5g is about the limit of the cone filter, you need to take the cone out and use the big filters to produce enough to fill the thermos.
On Hoff's review he says he just used the pre programmed "Gold" method which I've also done, but there's a lot of options you can modify including bloom time and water temp.

This was the review that I watched...

Currently owning a Technivorm and love it for when I'm making coffee for 2+ people. That's the only time I use it. If I had the Sage with the thermal carafe I'd probably use it to brew my two cups I usually have in the morning at different times.
Having said that, the Technivorm is probably going to last longer than a Sage so ... don't know

Anyone got a clever dripper they no longer need, before I go and buy new? Ta

I’m switching to decaf beans (I know I know, I’m such a pussy) but does the roast make a difference? I’m sure it shouldn’t but wanted to get the hive mind on it.
Mexican water is what I’m going for.
-
• #23814
Roast impacts flavour, darker generally having a more bitter taste. Doesn’t really impact caffeine levels. Same applies in decaf as in standard beans.

Mexican water is what I’m going for.
Not familiar with that term, but are you sure that's not the decaffeination process (I know Swiss water is one of the common decaffeination processes) as opposed to roast level?
Roast level should be unaffected, whatever roasts you like with standard should taste the same when decaffeinated (subject to the quality of the decaffeination process of course)

Any interest in the Timemore Sculptor grinders which are either out or due out sometime soon?
https://www.sculptor.timemore.com/
Comes in 78mm and 64mm versions which each have either flat burrs (the S version) for espresso or ghost burrs for pour-over/filter.
The 078S is yet to come out it seems, but it will be a 400W zero retention large flat burr grinder for
~£600470 euros. It also has variable RPM -

Looks lovely
-
• #23818
They look dope. I absolutely won't be buying one. Wish you could fit 80mm burrs to the 078 so someone else can tell me how much better my coffee would be.
-
• #23819
I got the pricing wrong. It's actually: 282 Euros for the 064 or 064s and 470 euro for the 078s.
They will only be released on kickstarter, apparently mid-march: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/timemore/timemore-electric-coffee-grinder

I'm sure the Fellows in the design department worked around the clock on that
-
• #23821
Before import tax, right?
Don't get me wrong, I really like the look and features and it's a good price comparative to the market (especially compared to something like the OE Apex) but I just personally can't imagine buying a grinder for around half a grand all in that only does half my coffee.
-
• #23822
Looks more like a kitchen aid to me
-
• #23823
that only does half my coffee
Fair enough, but the s version is marketed as covering espresso to pour over (if that's what you mean). Not that using a single grinder for both frequently would be particularly fun.

I do this with the Niche and its completely fine. That said the Robot does make life a lot easier. With no flow control you might struggle more
-
• #23825
Also do this with the Niche and it's very straightforward
Oooh that’s not so far from my work ! Will give it a go this week
