I use the brompton rack and rack bag a lot to carry a tool bag. It works really well and I'm not sure an aftermarket one would be better. In my experience the rack without the bag is not that useful for carrying stuff.

Thank you. That is useful. The advantage of the Brompton rack bag is that it will match the front bag.

Got to see and pickup a T-line last week. Like a modern race bike, the stockier build of the frameset completely belies the featherlight weight. Apart from the Turbolito tubes, seriously impressed on first look.

What innovation is he talking about? The 1980s design? I like the Brompton design but the marketing as a cutting edge pice of tech is grating.

I think he's still talking about "the fold". It was protected by a 20yr patent that expired in 2020, and in the usual order of things that engineering solution would now become public domain as a social good. But they still want to try to have the market to themselves, so they've pivoted to protecting using copyright law by claiming it as a "design" or artistic piece of work that goes beyond the mere engineering aspect - then they can protect it for, what, 80yrs?

Thanks, it seems like a weird decision reading about it.

Has anyone managed to put a cassette on a Brompton? I was thinking of buying a Kinetics kit but don't want a weighty internal hub.

Popped into decathlon. To see what is the fussed is about. Not great but not the worst thing I’ve seen…

Interesting...
I don't know anymore how much is the cheaper Brompton these days, but this feels a bit steep for a Decathlon bike (just a feeling, maybe I would change my mind if I saw one in the flesh)... doesn't convince me it's worth it so far.
Also have a feeling it might not be as accommodating to tall riders as a Brompton.
Finally, checking out the Decathlon site, I came across this: "Lifetime warranty on the frame and stem (excl. hinge), rigid fork and handlebar" ... Excluding hinge! What? -

In another budget universe, I saw the Ti Brompton in Chelsea the other day, and was extremely impressed!

Quite a few such mod kits in the market, might be bit spendy though.

I saw one in Putney a couple of days ago going along nicely. Can’t remember if it had a rack or not.
If I were to be fortunate enough to own a T-line, I think I’d feel obliged to ensure any such rack is also made of ti.

Any black ones?
-
• #12994
Yes I do if you’re still looking
-
• #12995
Still not convinced, and the price seems a bit top end!
Wheels look small next to Brompton; are they 16"? -
• #12996
I didn’t get to look at it closely but you’re right my first impression was it looks smaller than 16.
It is coming to top end money for a basic A line now (though A-line Brompton are now 1k).

Yes I am thanks

I'm still thinking about Brompton IP for some reason. Bit more googling had me finding that the CEO of Brompton suggesting that Brompton are so complex that there is no way that an Asian company could manufacturer them and the reason to not manufacture there is to avoid sending their expertise over to be stolen. Lololololololol... it's a 40yo folding bike, I'm pretty sure the manufacturing might of China could crack it if they wished.

He's just jealous that they already have disc brake versions and derailleurs for more than 2 gears.

same arrogance of steve jobs minus any intellect or vision and a sub standard product
Get an aftermarket rack, Brompton original one is bit meh...
