  • Ha, well it's an unorganised run, with a 'leave whenever you like between 8-10am' approach, so there might very few people to get the jump on. Might still be worth the chuckle though.

  • Any tips for stretches to get rid of shin splints? I think tight calves and ankles the cause.

  • Garmin 945 has decided to stop connecting to iphone, tried everything. ffs

  • I wouldn’t stretch if you’ve shin splints. Maybe rolling / hard ball massage.

Probably more important is to work out why you get tight calves - weak calves, tight back, weakness elsewhere that’s making your calves work more, etc.

  • I haven’t suffered with shin-splints thankfully but had tight, painful calves for years and years.. no silver bullet but a mixture of strengthening, lengthening, rolling, and massage gun finally got me to a place where they don’t cause pain after every run (and now the tightness has moved on to my hips.. joy).. my assumption is that my entire posterior chain is tight and weak from years of neglect.

  • Thanks both. I’m 4 weeks into couch to 5k and also starting to cycle again after a few years of irregular activity.

Suspect it’s a combination of weak calves/ankles and overall tightness due to sitting at a desk/long distance drives etc.

Massage roller sounds like a sensible purchase alongside stretches and slowly building up strength.

Have a 10k in late May so that’s my goal.

  • Definitely try a massage gun too. You might want to look at the heel to toe drop on your running shoes as well. Usually too low a drop brings calf problems, no idea if it works the other way round though.

  • Potentially yes if that’s still available?

Wasn’t planning on an organised marathon this side of summer but could probably have a fair stab at sub-3 in Brighton…

  • Thanks. Need to get new running shoes anyway so will look at that.

  • Edited my response because it's too low a drop which can cause calf and achilles problems.

  • will cancel the flip flops I just ordered.

  • There's always the start at 9.59am and see how many you can catch option too...

  • Hi all, long shot but I'm meant to be running Cambridge half at the weekend but I'm injured so having to sit out. If anyone interested in my place let me know.

  • Entered an Ultra in June… on a track.

  • I'm a big fan of long distance track running. I've done three marathons round a track. How far is the ultra? Best thing is the aid stations every 400m

  • Ok, that’s reassuring that at least someone likes them.
I quite like the mental exercise aspect of it - I basically run long distance loops anyway but on the road.

It’s no fixed distance, essentially a marathon and then you can just keep going for up to 6 hours. Reckon I might be able to scrape 80km out if it.

It’s just up in Ware, if you fancy it: https://www.letsdothis.com/gb/e/circuit-du-sore-legs-part-trois-189450?utm_source=zig_zag_running&utm_medium=organiser_referral&utm_campaign=preferred&eventId=189450&preferred=true&utm_organiser_id=154978#zig_zag_running

  • I did their Christmas one in 2021. Well organised, but my friend's chip went a bit weird, and I beat him, despite him lapping me at least 4 times.

The worst thing is if it's windy, that becomes quite a grind.

My last marathon was 1 mile reps up and down Orient Way in Leyton (bit like a dual carriageway).

I think it's the mental aspect I enjoy the most, the more miserable the better, which is why I did the Christmas one, with non stop Christmas music promised.

I've got a broken ankle, so can't even walk properly yet, so for that reason I am out

  • mental exercise

"Just one more lap" ... every lap ;)

  • Mate, you like running tedious endurance routes around Waltham Forest? We appear to share hobbies.

Sorry, didn’t realise about the ankle - wishing you a speedy recovery on that.

  • It’s the not-bothering-to-count part that appeals.

Also, have never run on a track before.

  • Christ. Did 9km today after six months or so of zero runs. Hurts.

  • It’ll come back fast.

Doms will be fun on Monday, btw ;p

  • 3 months or so after getting injured I managed to run for an hour today. I've been doing the attached walk/run to get here, for anyone intereted. Man it's a good feeling. Fitness is shot but hoping a recently acquired Zwift Hub trainer is gonna be my secret weapon.
