  • Will you have electrical sockets on the island for a stick blender, food processor etc? Also a lip on the work surface to hold your pasta machine in place may be handy. In my old kitchen I had to open a drawer to fix mine in place, pretty annoying.

  • Looks fantastic, but not tempted to have the hob in the island? Makes cooking more sociable than doing it away in the corner.

You also need a plug socket in the island somewhere for impromptu laptop working. Also an integrated flush wireless Qi phone charger somewhere?

  • at a glance:
    no drainage board
    no plugs on island
    no extractor fan
island is flat one end and round the other
knives and cutlery are stored separately
nothing on the wall above the main area (art?)
pots and pans require bending over or crouching down to get

  • Where is the prep space meant to be? If to right of hob, is there enough space to the sink (so that someone could use it without getting in the way, or leave some pans there)? If on island, will you be rotating to wash hands/go to hob too often? Relatedly, where do you serve up from?

  • Where is the prep space meant to be?

My question too. Where are the workzones - Prep, cook, wash, clear, serve, snacks? How do they overlap, where are people going to get in each other's way?

  • @Tenderloin spices and sauces go where the rice, noodles and pasta go shirley?

Ambitious getting mugs and hot drinks in one draw no? You also have two locations for mugs or do these differ between coffee and other hot beverages?

Also, with a toddler you need easily a drawer dedicated to calpol paraphernalia...

  • integrated flush wireless Qi phone charger

Not convinced by those. A decent kitchen will long outlast whatever the latest charging standard is.

Same thing with USB sockets. Who wants 500mA as you might have installed a few years ago?

  • Interesting idea on the island drawers - I quite liked the different pull out drawers but maybe worth seeing it mocked up…

Square end of the island is a little bookshelf thing but now that you’ve mentioned a wine fridge…

There is an extractor in the ceiling towards the left hand wall which uses an old floo.

@NickCJ high up pots are things like casserole dishes or Hotpot which are used maybe 5-15 times per year. With the under stairs storage and utility room we have enough storage for all the things.

The island has 4 sockets, round end has 4 cupboards for big electrical items, prep will happen on island. We don’t like hob or sink on the island. Island has a lip. Draining board is under the sink and grooves routed into worktop next to sink. Prep will be done either side of hob or on the island. Between the dining table and island then is close to 6m of space in the room.

@TW wash and clear is the zone by sink - scrape food into bins, rinse in sink, load into dishwasher. Think that works? I do hear your point about prep but think this works ok

Wireless/usb charges are a no-no for me as they break/become redundant over time.

Think knives separately from cutlery is normal or do others have those mixed together? I have too many knives for that I think… @platypus good call on all of the pots and pans being low - might do a swap around with serving plates.

@andos we have Rice and Noodles in industrial quantities - so there’s the daily use containers and the 10kg sack the other side of kitchen! That draw would be mugs, teas, other hot drinks - mugs on the other side are for coffee. Was the setup we had before and worked well. Do you keep that toddler stuff in the kitchen? I’d earmarked the bottom left drawer for Tupperware and misc stuff for some of that but maybe not enough space…there is a lot of that stuff eh!

  • I should probably add the other renders of the kitchen to help explain but I was focussing on drawer layouts 😬 - appreciate everyone’s feedback. You end up not being able to see the wood from the trees after a while on these things.

  • Our 5 year old has already commandeered two kitchen cupboard with water bottles, lunch boxes and all kinds of shit. Then there are general small peoples drugs that you inevitably buy too much of but seems wasteful to throw it away.

Saying that you look to have 5 time the storage space of our place so I'm sure you'll be fine.

It looks like an awesome space.

  • If prep is on the island, knives might be better there also. Utensils by the hob, where you use them.

Spices by the oven - might get too warm, which they don't like.

Mugs & hot drinks between prep & cook means nobody can do hot drinks during meal prep.

Similarly, dishwasher by the oven - the other side would mean that it can be emptied at any time.

Does the island just have drawers on one side? It's all where the prep & cooking is being done - lot's of scope for overlap & being on top of each other.

  • Bigger bin, that’ll fill up very quickly.

  • At this stage I'd just move and hope for the best.

  • We originally had knives and utensils swapped for this reason but as the island drawer is larger went for utensils there.

I don’t think I run such a tight prep kitchen that teas won’t be able to be made also that can be accessed from the sink side of things.
    Spices getting hot good point.

  • i generally prefer not to keep knives in a drawer. Get a nice magnetic bar (like this) for them and have them on display and away from where someone might cut themselves reaching into a drawer

  • I refuse to have my knives and cutlery stored together.
Partly knife care, but also keeping knives out of child's hands.

Depends on how you like to cook, I like having commonly used items outside of drawers for easy access, like knives on a magnetic bar, commonly use utensils, tray of oils, salt, pepper, soy sauce, sesame oil.

I like the idea of a seamless island, I lack a spacious prep surface, so an island like yours would be a dream.

  • Yeah, I really like the magnetic bars and it probably is the correct option but then aesthetics get in the way as that back wall will be totally clear bar the douglas fir shelf that runs the whole way along, my current plan was to make one of these kind of in-draw solutions.

  • Hey mate, I'll do a proper step by step of how it went over in this thread as there seems to be a bit of interest in this sort of thing at the moment.

  • why not get a bit of the wood you're using and get a magnetic bar made from it? #matchymatchy

  • They're pretty easy to make too - just rout out a channel, and glue in a bunch of magnets.

The hard part is making the wood nice and flat and square, but if you buy it pre-cut (like a shelf) you're laughing.

  • I have one of these which I find keeps blades safe and minimising contact with the wood so they stay sharp.

  • Your tupperware and misc drawer needs to be about 5 times bigger.

Also the cupboard for awkwardly sized kid stuff that won't stack anywhere.

  • Can anyone recommend a tiler please? SW London.
