Skateboarding

Is there a video of it? I've skated the meanwhile gap back in the day (pre skatepark) and even the prospect of ollying it was way beyond any of us. It's gnarly as, gap is huge and the transition is really sharp.

I walked there today. Skated their back in the day. It's mental. Loads of penny stuff wasn't filmed. I think this was a poster in an early Sidewalk.

Yeah I remember it. Hard to imagine anyone being able to nollie-anything it.

That brought a few lovely memories flooding back

Had some fellow rad and bad dads round last night for some beers and skate nostalgia.

Highlight was the Thrasher Dean Lane doc, which I’d not seen before. As an honorary Bristolian of the last 20ish years, it’s was great to get a history lesson on local skate culture.

Sounds like you're just a bit bigger than me (still a beginner here) but I go for 8.5s with UK11 feet. Seems like the trend is going towards wider at the moment so I think you could go for a 8.75 but equally 8.5 would probably be ok.

If you're going to be mainly cruising and carving, I'd lean towards a wider board - 8.5-9"
Since I started again, I've gone wider and wider (started with an 8" board, now I've got a 8.38" and I'm itching to try 8.5 or 8.75 next). It's just generally nicer to stand on! Much more confidence inspiring, and more forgiving when you're coming out of a carve or off coping.

You could go larger with wheels, too. And maybe go with something like a 90a hardness - still hard enough to revert/powerslide easily, but much less prone to slide out and also won't lose speed on shitty rough concrete.

Eldest has asked for a skateboard for her birthday (7). Not convinced she'll be a natural, is a penny board a good shout or are there smaller skateboards which would be a little more forgiving on the steering, manoeuvering?

As an aside, I just found an old deck (no trucks) in a skip I was raiding for wood. Stuck it in the work basement and I can still bust a switch flip (deck only), never fully got the hang of regular kickflips.
