There's also a possibility he accepted a cash in hand offer via PM and accepted a very low offer to skirt fees etc. It happens.

OP looks like they're based in Peterborough, as per an earlier classified ad.

Ebay seller based in Northern Ireland, as per their ebay listing.

The frame was most likely posted at cost, for the original forum sale to take place anyway.

To sell on ebay you must pay fees, of 12.8%; but on this forum, you do not pay any fees to sell. Selling on ebay with a; 'buy it now price with best offer', it is normal practice to list the item for more than you actually want; that way when offers are invited; you have wiggle room.

The sale doesn't seem to have accrued the seller any profit. They achieved their probable goal of recouping their cash. This forum listing was hardly thronging with replies, dibs and other users' intending to buy, so there's no guarantee; 'offering the frame back on the forum' would have achieved the same result?

'Robbing a bank' is pretty much, universally, a crime. However; selling your legal and legitimately owned property, for whatever price another party sees fit to buy it for; without coercion, is definitely not* - Your analogy is non-sensical and therefore moot.

*Unless it is a trial by internet bike forum users on perceived ethics.

its not illegal but it's unethical and violates the spirit of this forum. these classifieds are a place to get a hassle free exchange done for a fairer than market price.

actions like this will slowly erode the spirit of this forum and turn it into an untrusting and sadder place to trade. everyone i've met to buy/sell with has been an enthusiast and sound cyclists. some of them have even let me ride off with the parts and send money after. you don't get that out on ebay and gumtree, that's why this place is great.

I know you're playing devil's advocate here and proving that there was no arbitrage, but we shouldn't be defending such actions regardless of PnL

It sold for £310 so only looks like a £20ish profit.

Ebay fees are reduced at the moment, currently 80% off final listing fees, for me and my wife at least.

That is if the buyer didn't pay the OP for postage on top of the the forum price? May even be a loss. Who knows... Who cares?

Edit: Maybe the OP is actually the ebay seller, maybe they fabricated the whole idea that it was sold to another party, to circumvent the trial, for the most heinous crime of crossposting?

No. If you actually just wanted to sell it and not make a profit you would list the lower price as the buy it now price, not a speculative 'buy it now with best offer' hoping someone will just pay the higher price.

If I'm not mistaken the item was sold quickly, people won't dibs if the OP has replied as sold and not 'provisionally sold to' etc etc. The frame was good price, it would have sold to someone else.

I never insinuated that any crime had taken place. It was simply an extreme example to illustrate how stupid your statement was to imply that because there had been no financial gain there could be no 'wrongdoing'.
