I'm actually using a PC portable as a bedside light at the moment and loving it. As long as you only need it for ambient light, because it's completely cableless it's so easy to pick up and turn on/off and it's great to be able to move it when necessary. I'm constantly tempted to get one/a couple more.
I think the table versions of the PC have inline switches...

My partner is open to wall lamps but I'm generally pretty averse. I can't really get on with the dangling cables and don't have the stomach/wallet to go chasing into walls at the mo.
We like the Hay Pao and PC and have found both for around £100, but they both seem to have the switches on the bottom which is a bit of a turn off (no pun intended).
&Tradition also have a couple of nice options but they're past the £100 mark. Maybe I need to adjust my expectations a bit.
