...just started Ulysses (James Joyce)....is this a bad decision???

Depends... are you having trouble sleeping? If so, no.

I actually got into it by the end, but I think it helps if you have a decent amount of Irish/Catholic knowledge and a more than passing acquaintance with the story of the Odyssey.

I did read the Odyssey a few years back....quite enjoyed it.
