My commute is Penge - Canning Town so not too far off yours. I always take the Waterlink Way through Catford, Lewisham, Deptford etc all the way up until the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. It might not be the most direct route but it's by far the nicest I've found. More or less all away from traffic which is much nicer and feels quicker!
