Fairlight cycles - any opinions?

  • I have ordered a 56t but have been second guessing whether I should change to a 58r. I am 6 foot 1 with long legs, any anecdotal advice/experience would be useful.

@theflatboy - you mentioned in another thread you have a 58r at the same dimensions... do you have any photos? I currently ride a 56cm CAAD7 with a 130mm stem, it feels about right lengthwise but I want something less aggressive, hence the 56t ordering! I am probably going round in circles at this point.

  • I'm 185 with 86 inseam and ride 58r slammed.

Check your stack reach and then seattube plus seatpost extension. You'll get an idea from that on what you should ride.

  • Yep hundreds! There are probably some earlier in this thread! I'll dig some out for you anyway, but it sounds like me, you and skinny are all pretty much the same in terms of bike fit and set-up preference...

Edit - post #179 in this thread is a pic of mine, it's still basically set up like that now.

  • Ended up buying a rack, so that I can happily rock my bigxtop bar bag without klikfix. Wizard work bottle/snack pouch because water freezing is upsetting.

Still do so that I can ride through winter: 700x38c tyres on hunt wheelset with PDW guards.

Fitness low, but still just love how good this bike feels.

  • How are you finding the Ultradynamicos? Be wanting a pair for ages but worried they might not live up to the hype !

  • Damn, that's mean.

  • Fragile, but roll so delightfully nicely, decent enough grip and generally happy. However I did not pay full price so that helps. I’ll be fitting some wider Teravail Rutlands for the summer on this wheelset so it will be interesting to compare.

@Tijs very kind of your sir.

  • Here is my current setup with mudguards.

  • Would anyone care to persuade me that I shouldn't try and sell my Midnight Special (a few months after deciding not to and now running it in full road mode - 700 x 32) to help find the purchase of a Strael?

I've got a hankering for something more purely road/endurance and steel and feel like a Strael would scratch that itch perfectly.

  • I used a BSP-97 Postfix from BBB to help with seatpost slip on the gravel bike.
It's a supplementary collar that clamps around the post and sits above the normal seatpost clamp to stop it sliding. I should get another one for my eeSilk, not that it's slipping, I just like using them to mark post height + insurance.

  • You'll regret selling a midnight special

  • @JuanSock it's true, but I do have a Crust that does basically all of its job. Thanks for putting it on record though. I'll ponder further before making any rash moves.

@greeno 56cm in the 'hot mayonnaise'. Well ridden, but I have both the original fork and the ENVE Adventure Fork I put on it.

  • Okay thanks, way too big for me anyway.

  • I think the Strael is probably a nicer road ride than a MS even with your fork change. For anyone else I would say they are probably not going to feel comfortable making the kind of mods you mentioned in another thread, but you did repaint a new crust so dunno. MS will let you go silly large tyres down the line.

I think you want a project so might as well go HAM on the MS with those mods, get the enve fork and frame painted nicely, and see how far the rabbit hole goes.

    And make a thread.

  • Ha! I did speak to Winston about those and he was less than keen on the two bigger ones. Painting the Crust feels in a different league to those. The Strael would do the biggest of them (proper through axle dropouts) and has snazzy dynamo light routing.

Your first comment about the Strael is what really piques my interest, as I am after a steel road bike. I've got road plus/all road/gravel covered with the Crust.

  • Strael all the way. If you're in London and trying a 56T would help you make up your mind, drop me a line.

  • Keep the MS and get a Strael 🤣

  • @ElGonzo I am, and that's very kind of you. Almost exactly the right size too. I'd be a 56R by the looks of things. I've no idea when I'd be able to take you up on it, so I think your recommendation will have to do, thank you.

    @JuanSock dangerous game that!

  • Random one - are you still offering test rides haha? I think I’m between a 56T (slammed as I have 35mm spacers and top cap on current bike) and a 58R

  • Sure, drop me a PM and we can sort something out. My 56T has a full spacer tower but should still give you an idea.

  • I'd go with 58r all day then. 20mm spacers. Gives you flexibility if you want to go lower eyc

  • The thing is, my fit report suggested a 80mm stem on a 58r, which just sounds a bit short and I’m worried it could make the handling odd/not look great

  • Ah I see now with that info. Yes that or even 56r then. So you only have 90mm stem on the genesis?
