is there much of a functional difference between budget Shimano SPDs and higher end stuff?

Not enough to justify the price. My default position is PD-M540 because they're prettier than 520, but the price premium has grown substantially since I last bought pedals.

Brilliant, thanks for the info. I might as well give the 520s a go at just over £20 a pair, if I like them I can always go for a posher pair on my posher bike.

I've got some you can have for a tenner, some use but bearings are fine.
