I put a new wheelset on my gfs mixte as old steel rims the brakes aren't as good on them as with alloy rims, so maybe something worth considering as an iffy brake moment can soon put someone off the idea of riding. Similar idea but flatbar and sram triggers instead of porteur bars, fitted a kick stand and pannier too. Just waiting for fair weather to suit her riding style lol

Its nearly done... Just awaiting spokes for new wheels (KinLin ADHN polished on NOS Ultegra 6600 with Sapim SS DB spokes and DT brass regular nipples + 28c tyres, probably Pro Slik)
Stuck with original brakes as they are fine, added Koolstop salmons so that they work in the wet/ on a polished/machined rim.
Cinelli stem + VO porteur bars + tektro inverse/suicide levers + fizik black tape + NOS 8s deore thumbie
Single arabesque 42t on 600 arabesque cranks with whatever pedals were floating about. 8s sram 11-28t cassette + KMC x99 8s chain + campag long cage mech, will swap to arabesque long cage when I find one.
VO hammered mudguards + campag aero post + selle turbo ladies town saddle + king cage stainless classicDespite the hefty 6s campag wheel + freewheel thats currently boat anchoring the back end down just now its surprisingly light, certainly no point going lighter and it looks amazing in the flesh. Everywhere it goes it gets attention, little too much attention in town when locked up so might have to get my GF to invest in a FAHG or 2x mini D as current mid D is maybe not quite enough.

Haha thread dredge.
Bike still going, misses doesn't use it as much as back then, its too nice to commute on now, theft in Glasgow is out of control so you can't leave anything better than an apollo outside for any amount of time.
Built a set of nice rims, narrow polished on NOS 90's or early 00's ultegra road hubs. Been a great bike, unlikely to sell it anything soon.

Love that mixte
So my GF has taken a keen interest in bikes and took a liking to classic mixtes. Managed to track a few nice ones down, narrowly missed out on a lush Dave Yates made from decent tubing, 30 years old but only ridden a handful of times.
Via the forum tracked down this late 80s/early 90s Bob Jackson, also only a handful of rides on it. Paintwork is black enamel with a slight fleck in it, not a mark on it, not even haze!
As it stands:-
Bob Jackson Mixte Reynolds 531 Super Tourist tubing, simple lugs 18.5"
Campag athena r.hub on Mavic Ma40 rear 700c
Gipiemme Azzurri f.hub on Mavic Ma2 front 700c
Campag Chorus & Athena 8 speed group (save a mirage f.mech)
Campag aero seatpost
Selle Italia Turbo saddle touring sized
Cinelli 1a stem (not fitted yet) and bars with Fizik tape
90s Shimano LX canti's
Where its heading:-
V/O Porteur bars
Dia Compe inverse levers*
Elkhide sewn on grips (black)
90s deore 7/8 speed thumbie NOS
V/O Hammered 45mm mudguards (silver)
32c tyres black, prob durano/kojak
90s Shimano LX canti's
600 Arabesque cranks + single chainring (silver)
600 Arabesque r.mech
EITHER:- Keep r.wheel and put a 6/7s freewheel on it OR (preferably) newer hub* + 7s cassette (much lighter and better shifting)
So, you can sort of see where this is going, classic looking but modern quality of ride with decent brakes and full mudguard Porteur style Mixte. Use will be mostly town and casual runs so only needs a single ring + 12-28t
Options are with the drive, looking to save a little weight as its a touring specced frame so not the absolute lightest, thinking about older ultegra 6500 hubs on mavic Ma40 grey anodized, so modern enough, but classic looks. And the fact decent quality 7s freewheels cost the earth as well as weighing about the same.
Thoughts?
