I bumped into him IRL probably about the same sort of time

I know it's now in the past but there was a massive Audio Jumble in Tonbridge very recently (like last week-end). Basically a big hall full of 2nd hand gear (instruments, hifi as well as records/CDs...).
Next one in Oct-Nov ? -

A lot of very high end vintage audio.

There were some expensive stuff. But also a few people filling up Sainsbury's trolleys full with separates of all kinds.

• #1356
Yeah quite a few vintage HiFi dealers buying stock, must have been very good prices on a lot of things.

That Garrard turntable was a fine unit in its day, but that's a very strong price in 2022. Several Linn LP12 units on eBay for well under a grand!

This seems to be the default audio/hifi thread now (please direct me otherwise if I've missed one!) - basically, I picked up a lovely (looking) Rotel amp just before lockdown - RA-312. It worked perfectly when first plugged in. Then, my mate moved in with a full DJ/speaker set-up so we moved over to his gear and mine went back in its box. Not touched since, just tried to set it up again not getting the slightest hum/crackle/noise through (into epos speakers and just trying a phone via an aux lead) - I've checked the fuses which are fine. Power light coming on so seems like that side of things is working. Any ideas/things I've overlooked/stupid mistakes anyone can think of that might cause this? It was an ebay bargain so I'm not too fussed if I have to move it on but obviously I'd love to get it working again. Cheers

Speakers switched on?

what source are you using?
try rotating the volume knob a few times as the contacts can get contaminated.
if source is ok, power is ok, but no output then not sure what else to suggest.
btw there is this thread:

edit - just seen where you say you are using a phone via an aux lead - anything else you could try?
-
• #1361
Speakers have no power supply/switch. I assume this means passive but, as is becoming evident, my knowledge in this arena is basically non-existent...
-
• #1362
Source is phone via an aux cable. Phone definitely working, will double check the aux lead but it worked a few weeks ago....
Thanks for the thread link! Will crosspost there. I knew I'd seen another one, but when searches for 'hi-fi' and 'audio' failed me I gave up...😂

I think the first knob on the amp controls speaker output, check that's pointing to the right bit?
It looks like it has lots of in out switches too - could these be cancelling each other out, or the tape monitor switch? -
• #1364
Can you try with headphones?
-
• #1365
I think I've tried every combo of the output selector and the 'tape dub' switches. Very frustrating! I don't have headphones with a large enough jack to try but have tried with a different speaker that I know is working...
Thanks for the suggestions!

You'll hate me for asking, but have you definitely got the aux cable going in to the aux input and the function knob pointing towards 'aux'? Only I've lost count of the amount of times I've overlooked something that obvious.
-
• #1367
Ha, valid question, but yeah, I've tested the aux cable with another hifi, tried both the aux and tuner inputs and every selection position on the input knob...

Just hijacking this thread because it has some vintage hi-fi followers.
I'm looking to set up a half decent hi-fi system at home and was wondering what would be other people's go to for a combo of amp, speakers and record deck. I'd favour something with nice warm sound rather than super precise, and look is reasonably important.
Other contenders might be an AR A60 amp, and I like the look of Celestion Ditton speakers.
This is where I'd got to so far from looking at What Hi-Fi all time lists.
Amp: Nad 3020
Speakers: Wharfedale Linton 3xp
Record player: Rega Planar 3Anyone got any insight as to whether these will sounds particularly good or bad together, and any suggestions for other units that might be a good combo? The Planar 3 seems to be a bit out of price proportion with the other two, so any suggestions for a different record player would be welcome.

personally, I'd go for a newer amp. a long time ago, I had a NAD 3240PE which was a newer design than the 3020. That died, I tried to get it fixed but the repairer never fixed it and I eventually gave up chasing him.
Plenty of nice stuff around - maybe look at Cyrus , Rotel or Denon for an alternative to the NAD.
other than that, looks like a good selection.

here's a reasonable looking Cyrus 2 for eg. These have a decent built in phono stage:

+1 for Cyrus - I've got a Cyrus 2 and PSX. Worked amazingly til my pal shorted the speaker wires setting up for a party. Got them set up to a Technics 1500mk2 and a pair of Kef 105/2. I'm not an audiophile and lean more to aesthetics over anything really. No complaints really from myself or anyone else thats listened to them. Def a touch clean but needle choice makes a big difference.

Thanks both. I think it will depend partly on what comes up secondhand, so the more good options the better. The Cyrus 2 is definitely a tidy looking unit!

Have an AR A60 kinda going spare, needs a service as one channel has blown, may try and get that done this week (professionally).

It’s really worth spending the extra on the Rega. They’re excellent. I’ve had mine for over 30 years now.

+1 on the Rega 3 but a Rega 2 would also be a good buy.
