Thanks - I think I have some old high flange 120 wheels with 4sp block on them, that I could get them laced to ^ rims. That tractor comparison made me chuckle - I intend to ride it long and slow anyhow, as there are other, more thoroughbred rides in my stable for throwing round the corners. Size wise this is perfect for me at 56.
Re fixed/fixed, have seen and read about people using freewheel on fixed threads, not sure if that is a good idea, but plenty have said no problems on theirs... -

Its not the end of the world as the saddle came with a frame i bought but its a B17 oval stamped. Been sitting around for years, i fitted it today and rode it for 5 mins and it ripped right across the front.
Shame as it hadnt been stretched or hardly used but just badly looked after.

Leather doesn’t last forever, they just rot eventually even if they’ve been looked after. The fibres and proteins break down over time and given enough time there’s not much you can do about it. My favourite Wrights saddle did the same.

Hi! I am kind of building a 50s Bertrand (London), I got from @Foreigner65 a few months back. Its a lovely framset and while I had quite some trouble at first (headset cup spacing (30.-30.2) and a slightly off rear end, its seems to be ready to be build.
However, the chainline still gives me some troubles. I had quite a few vintage road frames set up with the same chainset and BB (107) with the same rearwheel I am planning to use here (modern fixed gear hub with 120mm).
The chain is off a few mm if I am running the outer ring on Campagnolo Triomphe cranks and only works with the inner ring, I am wondering if there is a crankset (square tapered) I could run with a narrower chainline, i.e. on the outer ring without using a different BB length.
As I am forced to bed by covid right now, pics won't be avaiable for some days. But any insight in the problem at hand or on the Bertrand brand (I know the classic lightweight page) are very welcome.

Hi Nora, not nice that bl...y covid, hope you get better soon. The bike could've been spread to 126mm at rear to accept 6 speed block it had on when it came to me. I do know for sure that the chainset was SR Royal with black anodised rings, not sure of the bb or its lenght though, sorry.

Would be tempted to buy thr for nostalgia having worked there but Leeds is just a bit too far. Transfers look like the ones I had to apply with varnish BITD....

First outing on Russ. Really felt the 26" rims and heavy tyres combination - @clubman you are absolutely right in saying 700c and better rubber will transform the ride quality - hubs and rims on order.
Few details still to sort out
pedals - have some BSA in cleaning/de-rusting process at the moment
stem - on a look out for a clip headset one
brakes - much easier to reach than before,
What do you advice on brake cables - the rear caliper attaches on the right hand side, so shall I move it to come out to the right of the stem? At the moment it seems both front and rear are on the left. Or shall I use continental way, left for front, right for rear? Colour wise I think they kind of match the logo. And yes third top tube cable clip to be added.

That model died late 50s if I'm correct and those lugs and wraparound seatstays together with cantis - never seen a blue riband like that before. Plus braze on DT levers etc all point out to something else.
Seems a nice touring bike though - if your size go for it, you won't lose money on it with few good parts on it - Brooks, Mafac cantis, triple chainset etc...

Lovely holdsworth with top of the range parts. Worn but loads of patina check out the Chainring.
Im guessing late forties judging by the pre 51 gb brake lever and i think Davis cast fork crown with round fork blades. -

I really like it. I replied to your thread on Retrobike - sadly there’s a handful of users on there at the moment who are just filling the forum with shit banter instead of anything useful. I’m sure they’re very fun in real life but it seems to be stopping a lot of the old regulars from posting much. Or their posts are just getting lost in the noise.
Anyway, looks salvageable and I’d keep it ratty looking!

I own a 1939 La Variable, not track. Owned a 1933 track path one too before selling it was too small.
They're both on here in Current Project.
Any older hub should have that OLD. I had some Airlite's (all be it double fixed) built into Kinlin's ADHN 700c's in Silver and they ride nicely and the rims themselves aren't too costly. Only issue was finding the 40 hole drilling rim, (it was in the middle of all those supply issues last few years) but I think you can get the again now. Hubjub sells them I think, as do others.
They're not the lightest rim, but then on bikes this age that's not generally the main consideration. Lovely bike by the way. I had a 30's Russ in the past, rode like a tractor but was certainly an enjoyable experience and was a lovely frame , just too small sadly. (The frame angles were so relaxed you had to think about turning a corner about 50 feet in before you actually got to it, else you'd never get round it!)
