  • I must admit I'm happy to have never seen one before today.

  • happy to have never seen one before

Horses for courses. I have a single line level source, so the knob is all I need between that and the power amps. I could just use the on screen volume slider since the source is a computer, but like you I prefer a traditional UI 🙂

  • Apparently it can "dynamically decorate audio environment"

Why not enjoy the worst of all possible worlds with a Bluetooth valve amp with tone controls 🤮

  • Knobs over remotes. My wingspan exceeds the dimensions of the room.

Le plan: P1 (not plus, for cheaps(?), amp with knob, speakers that match the shelf. Thanks. I feel fully armed to go and consult my LBS....L.A.S...L..

  • Could be gold anodised FTW

  • Any reason to not pair the P1 with Bowers&Wilkins 607 S2 speakers?

  • P1 (not plus, for cheaps(?), amp with knob

The + in the Plus is just the phono stage, you don't need it if your chosen amp has one.

  • gold anodised FTW

You get gold accents on the Pro version 🙂

  • Douk Audio, subsidiary of Nobsound. "The Most Cost-effective HiFi Audio Brand".

  • I’d avoid the current B&W 600 series, personally, the reviews are quite mixed. Here’s one for the 606 (although he does pull in the 607 as well, and is equally scathing about it)

  • I might as well throw this in while I’m here. I’ve found a good deal on a box-opened pair of ProAc DT8 at a local independent hifi place, and I’m keen to have a listen.

Anything to know/watch out for? They’ll be replacing an old pair of B&W 601 S2.

  • Thought I'm cognizant of the comments on the previous page about the quality of Pro-Ject gear, I have a possibly controversial suggestion for the small room system:

Realistically in a room that size, you're never going to have to push the amp that hard, and therefore the actual amp choice is not hugely important as audible distortion is unlikely.

Therefore, how about a Pro-Ject Juke Box E and allow yourself to maximise value on the speakers, where you can really hear the benefit (and maybe a new stylus or something if you must). Keeps things uncluttered also.

  • I know this isn’t what you asked for at all, but have you considered just not getting a turntable and using a streaming only setup if this is a secondary listening room? Seems much more straight forward and substantially cheaper.

  • have you considered just not getting a turntable and using a streaming only setup

It's his meditation space, where's the ritual in streaming?

  • Is the correct response

  • Proac stuff is great. If your amp can handle them, go for it.

Re. The 1k system, I'll throw in my usual recommend for buying second hand.

  • My wife has Autism- the messy, stuff frazzled, hoarding, charity shop allured, needy, knifes upside down in the cuttlery drawer kind, so although I'm happy for the troops to benefit from my current setup, I require a little space of my own. Hence I've commandeered the space once occupied by a shower for my primary listening room.

  • The amp is a slight concern right enough. It’s an Audiolab 6000A and on paper it’s a good match, but realistically it’s a £600 amp and it’s not going to do them justice fully.

As long as it’s an improvement on my current setup, I can probably live with that for a year or two and then buy a better amp.

  • For sure. The big positive is having mismatched 'value' in components is its then really easy to justify upgrades to yourself. Sounds like a win/win to me.

You could always take your amp into the shop to demo them.

  • Ah, given you have a P3 and are looking at cheaper options I had assumed this would be the secondary listening space. Must’ve not read something properly.

  • @DisappointingBob if you're having your speakers close to the wall pretty much only Dali are designed to be that close, and pretty much all other speakers are designed to work best at 30cm away.

  • Looking for turntable, amp, speakers for a very small room - less than 2m x 2m. Will have only one chair, two shelves, and 'hi-fi'.

I never installed a stereo system in a room that small, but when I read 2m x 2m my first thoughts were "I'd get nearfield monitors for this, and definitely spend a chunk of the budget on sound treatment of the room".

  • Another very small room suggestion could be some decent headphones and having more space for shelves and a nice chair where positioning doesn't matter.

  • I hadn't really clocked the tiny dimensions of the room but I heard these in a store 1 time and would definitely consider them the best tiny bookshelf speakers I've ever heard. They are really small.
