I've got a tube notcher at home which is about the size of a cordless drill. Not that I've been doing much bike building recently but that's another story

Not sure I get this, am I being slow? Do you mean when brazing the fitup can be sloppy compared to welding since the parent material doesn't melt?
And thanks!

It's pretty hard to bridge gaps in thin wall tubes with welds, it's pretty easy with bronze :)

Nice, I was going to ask how you did it. Hadn't heard of tube notchers before. Quick google suggests they are a jig for holding the workpiece and a holesaw, powered by a drill?

Good stuff Andy. Hope you're doing well?

• #58
Ah yeah.. instructor was saying similar today.
-
• #59
Yes exactly. I've read somewhere that you can get away with only 50% contact when brazing. I can't remember where tho.

Yeah exactly
I have this onehttps://stakesys.co.uk/stakesy-s-tne75-hole-saw-tube-notcher
I didn't pay as much as that though

I used one of these when I built a go kart frame from pretty heavy pipes, I’d think that on some nice tubes it would be up to the job. Just don’t trust the angle markers and use an angle finder.

Yeah it would work fine. You'd just have to put something between the tubes and the clamp. Those narrow pieces doing the clamping would very easily dent bike tubing

I haven't forgotten about this thread, just been working long days on the frame.
It's done! Fork yet to be completed...

Congrats.
Just leave it like that, maybe whack a bit of clear coat on it. -
• #65
Looks good. Did the planned tyre clearance work out?

• #66
Congratulations!

Very Winston Vaz of you to leave the flux on!
Looks good. Any more photos? -
• #68
Cheers. I'm happy with the outcome. Right after the course I headed straight back to normal day to day routine so the frame is currently awaiting some finishing work, but I soaked the flux off as soon as I got it home :)

missed this somehow. very cool.

I've now made the fork for this, and have faced the bottom bracket shell, reamed the seat tube and had a friend turn the fork crown race down to the correct diameter.
A pre-paint build will follow shortly.

Sooooooo

Frame has been sent to the painter a while ago but no updates yet. Luckily I am not in a massive hurry as I'm pretty busy trying to finish my thesis.

This looks absolutely class
If you are brazing frames you can get away with karate chopping the tubes :)
Great work! Keep it up
