I saw Burt Bacharach back in July 2002, when he was a spritely 73. He came on late because he couldn't find his shoes, then opened with What the World Needs Now.
All the hits were played, many stories were told and he had a good trio of singers on most of the vocal duties, but the secret surprise of the evening was Will Young, fresh from winning Pop Idol, who sang Wives and Lovers and a track Burt had written with Cathy Dennis for Will's album, called What's in Goodbye. He was incredible, and got the first standing ovation of the evening.
The second was for Burt himself, of course, at the end of the show.
