In an immediate response, the European Union has mobilised search and rescue teams for Türkiye following its request to activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

Urban Search and Rescue teams have been quickly mobilised from Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, France, Greece, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania to support the first responders on the ground. Italy, Spain* and Slovakia * have offered their rescue teams to Türkiye as well. The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre is in direct contact with the authorities in Türkiye to coordinate further support if needed.

One of the worst things that can happen in a situation like this is a massive influx of foreigners looking to help. You need expertise not manpower.

The people being sent will be tasked with working out who is needed on the ground and coordinating with local authorities and other international missions to agree who provides what. Once this is known then more people will be brought in.

Right now the priority is to find those trapped by still alive, but over time lots of different skills are required.

I’ve got friends and colleagues who work in these situations it’s pretty much what @andyp said. The other thing you need to consider is that the best most experienced people are most likely based in the earthquake zone.
The relief effort for the displaced is going to be most likely be a supply of resources and handling the displaced population.

The worst example of human baggage I’ve seen was on the Isle of Wight ferry. I used to commute on the high-speed service and Cowes Week was a bloody nightmare. Queue-jumping was rife with one person standing in line for 20 mins with the rest of us while the others downed another Pimms and staggered past at the last minute. One evening some of my work colleagues were left on the gangplank, destined to wait for the next crossing because the baggage of a bunch of jumped-up yachting toffs was loaded onto the seats by the ferry staff. Bloody outrageous.

"Excuse me, can I sit there please?" whilst starting to make your preparations to sit where the offending bag is, pointing at it and smiling hard into their eyes.

I had to ask someone to move their bag on a packed overground train recently. Turns out they had insane BO. Wish I'd stood.

Don't agree. Sometimes you want to be able to stretch your legs a bit (I've got a fucked left knee). That said, if anyone looks at the seat, I am happy to move so they can sit down, I'm not blocking it or anything.

You're being unnecessarily defensive there. There is no way that every "stare straight ahead and fuck everybody else" seat hogger has a physical impairment. I'm obviously not talking about people who do.

real chancers know exactly what they're doing when they say "oh i'd be happy to move it if someone asks" because they know that through inaction they're forcing people to have to make an uncomfortable demand before they feel required to act like a normal member of society and make room and brits just don't have it in them most of the time.

like atz it's fine to sit where you like if you're able to anticipate someone needing the seat (no other seats and they're looking right at it being a great example) if i'm nearing my destination I typically move to the aisle seat if it is empty and if anyone gets on on before I need to get off I would stand up to let them take the window seat and explain I'm about to get off (lest I be pinned in by someone who thinks moving their knees 2 inches to the side is ample room for an adult sized person to get past before the bus driver closes the doors again). if more than one person needed a seat, i'd just go stand by the doors for the final 20 seconds of my journey, better they're already in a seat than getting in the way of people trying to leave the bus.
