  • One of the worst things that can happen in a situation like this is a massive influx of foreigners looking to help. You need expertise not manpower.

    The people being sent will be tasked with working out who is needed on the ground and coordinating with local authorities and other international missions to agree who provides what. Once this is known then more people will be brought in.

    Right now the priority is to find those trapped by still alive, but over time lots of different skills are required.

  • I’ve got friends and colleagues who work in these situations it’s pretty much what @andyp said. The other thing you need to consider is that the best most experienced people are most likely based in the earthquake zone.
    The relief effort for the displaced is going to be most likely be a supply of resources and handling the displaced population.
