Nice, yeah itโs a good little module. Just does what it does very well.

I don't know if I'm having a mini stroke or what, but I can't seem to remember how to make what I suspect is a painfully simple patch and I'm asking for help.
How do I make these chord tone?

I've got that 12!

My guess is it's a filtered piano stab with some reverb. Korg m1 preset was pretty popular.

Are all online logo design services equal? Guess not depending on how much you want to spend? Just had a look at band/music logos on Fiverr and they're all shit!
Anyone got any recommendations?

Looking at the Digitakt and Octatrack again. Everyone raves about param. lock, but the more I look at it, the more it seems like it's a necessary part of the workflow to overcome some frankly backwards limitations on the machines, namely the track count.
Coming from an MPC 1000 w/ JOSXl, I'm just not seeing the appeal of Elektron samplers, but I really want to know why they're so popular for Techno in particular. Anyone have experience with both Akai and Elektron that can chime in?

I have had Elektron kit since the original Monomachine/Machinedrum. At the time they were a great alternative to the workflow on DAW's like Ableton and Logic. 16 tracks for drums and 6 synth tracks was plenty for tracker/chiptune type music but mostly they were fun to interact with and for jamming on.
Fast forward to the contemporary synth scene and you have a multitude of small cheap synths to choose from. Elektron has their approach and they provide a lot of synth power and tracks for the money, you can use 2 or 3 machines together, they're no longer stuck with quantised notes or short fixed scales. However, everything happens with a small amount of knobs and a tiny screen. It's not a workflow that suits everyone.
I've had the octatrack for a few years, I'm currently reading through the manual and learning a bit more about the inner workings. It's a very deep machine, personally I lack the energy to program it to reach anything like it's capabilities. It's multidimensional in its abilities and the quality is great. If you feel there are not enough tracks then you need a second machine or third, then you need to mix them and everything gets exponentially more complicated.
TLDR - The Oktatrack is a great sampler but it takes time to learn and operate.

Also to answer your question regarding Techno. They're popular because they were developed as a tool to make Techno so they're good at it.

Thanks for the reply, but like have you ever had an MPC 1000? It's a 17yo machine at this point but it seems to completely outclass the Digitakt for sure, and possible the Octatrack for most applications on paper.

Yes, I've had an MPC1000. I didn't get into it that much because I prefer the SP1200 which I still have.
I'm not into playing synth top trumps so 'completely outclasses' doesn't mean much to me. Not even sure they're comparable machines to be honest.
The Machinedrum was partly Elektrons take on the SP1200. They've always leant in that direction. The MPC seems to appeal to finger drummers and hip hop fans more than Techno producers. Probably the pad layout and feel has a lot to do with that. That's one thing about Elektron that's always divided people.
I'd guess you wouldn't like Elektron gear, maybe stick with the MPC.

I can see how my choice of words might come off poorly. Really this coming from a personal insecurity that I'm missing something when looking at Elektron gear that's obvious to everyone else (wouldn't be the first time) and I thank you for your insight.
In more positive news - a friend just loaned me his M8 tracker when he heard I missed the last preorder. Pretty pumped to sit down with it after work.

Elektron is definitely not for everyone, don't worry if you don't vibe with it. I like Elektron stuff but even I can't deal with the Octatrack.

My production partner loves his Digitakt. I can't vibe with it at all. He cannot understand my 'fucking Linux in an enclosure' 1010 Music Blackbox, whereas I think it's just the most immediate thing ever!

Nice one. It's one of the few new pieces I've seen in the last couple of years that I wanted to try. Will be interested to hear how you get on with it.

Good so far. While I've been aware of trackers for a while, this is my first times laying hands on one. The real magic so far is the form-factor - most of my evening was spent just learning navigation and key-commands, but something about the M8 is really nice (probably the mechanical keys.) I don't think I've enjoyed learning a piece of gear this much since I first started out with Volcas.

I hope you get on with it after that wait!

Me too. Still - hopefully easily sellable if I don't.

They do seem to sell without a loss. I've been on the list a couple of years but I'm not sure what I'll do when my name comes up.

I kinda wish I'd borrowed the money when my turn came up, but being realistic I think by that point it would have just been another piece of equipment that would have sat in my studio unused due to lack of time. ๐

Congrats!

I'm coming up on the end of my first week with the M8 tracker and I'm just about finished with my first song on it. I don't know that I've ever used a more engaging piece of hardware.

Nice work! It definitely seems like a great little device in terms of ergonomics and portability, but I can't see myself getting on with the tracker workflow. Though I am tempted to pick up a teensy to pair with a Gameshell I've got kicking around as a budget option.
I adore my MC101, but wish they could've crammed another pair of tracks in there.
I already need another Pip Slope! I'm sequencing MCO using the Torso T1 and for ages I've been trying to figure out why there's continous noise to the VCO when there aren't any (or many) steps in the sequence, and of course the T1's gate output needs to go into an envelope, and then into the VCA. Tested it with the Pip Slope and it works a treat.
So I need another for Loquelic Iteritas!
