It’s generally viewed as a positive characteristic, shown more by empathetic and friendly people who, consciously or unconsciously, want the listener to feel at ease with and more socially equal to the speaker.

    Certainly explains me. I grew up somewhere with a relatively neutral accent (Cambridge) but then lived in various places with strong distinct accents: (South Yorkshire, California, Kansas/Missouri).
