  • Does the bontrager blendr system count for your "built in wahoo mount" part?

Not sure about the half price bit though...

  • Also be wary of fake chains - mental I know.
Always buy from an actual bike shop rather than eBay/Amazon.

  • Top tip! Counterfeiting chains seems like a lot of effort for very little reward.

  • Yeah that kinda thing, though the the Bont one looks a bit clunky tbh

  • Bloody hell. I'll check my new chain when it arrives! Something else to be paranoid about.

  • seems like a lot of effort for very little reward

To be fair, manufacturing any kind of roller chain is.

But once you're committed to making chain for <1p per link for the low end OEM market, getting 2p per link for some small cosmetic changes looks attractive.

  • Lots of Shimano fakes on Amazon and eBay

  • Lenovo X series laptops are well reviewed 'on here'

  • Yeah I reckon it is ok. 8th gen processor so it's ok for Windows 11. Win 10 to 11 is a free upgrade, don't play extra for it

  • Lol good shout on windows upgrade!

It’s literally a laptop just for my wife to use while teaching in a primary school so it doesn’t need a mad processor or anything. Just be be robust enough to survive!

  • Got a secondhand Lenovo and it's built like a brick shithouse, got a new HP thing on the cheap for watching films in bed and stuff at my other house and the screen is fine at the exact angle and it seems to work well but it's flimsy as fuck and I wouldn't want to have to move it much or have kids near it.

  • Those x280s claim to be designed to some mil spec durability requirements (although not clear what they actually are). Mine has coped well with being manhandled by a 2 year old.

  • not clear what they actually are

    MIL-STD-810G according to
    https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_X280/ThinkPad_X280_Spec.PDF

My work phone claims the same, main thing relevant to home gamers is ingress protection and drop testing, which IIRC is 1.2m drop onto 12mm ply backed by concrete, or 1.5m with the stock protective case.

As with so-called "aerospace grade" materials in bike parts, the claims are indicative of some things but not all the things the marketing department wants you to associate with those terms 🙂

  • Who decided, and when, that these things were called "suicide levers"? Because I remember having them on my bike when I was a kid and I did stop and I didn't die.

  • They came to be called that through empirical testing.

  • I didn't die

See also suicide hubs and suicide doors
None of them kill many people, but those who are killed brought it upon themselves.
    sui[Latin]=self[English]

  • Suicide girls?

  • Suicide girls?

Forever associated in my mind with the "fixie" boom of the first decade of this century. Maybe they got their name from riding brakeless 😀

  • When do people change from their winter bike/commuter to a summer commuter? Do people actually make any distinction or just always commute on the same thing?

I'd like to try and do the weekly shop after work on my nicer bike with gears and a rack so I can load panniers, but they are out gritting the roads tonight, so I'd rather not risk rusting it up. Am I being fussy or is this a wise choice?

  • I always commute on the same bike all year round with full length mudguards, even in the summer. The only time I deviate is if I fancy an extended MTB ride on the way home.

  • Yep, same bike all year (when I commuted). Dynamo lights, full mudguards, racks, panniers.

Had too much stuff to take to use any other bike.

  • I guess the short answer is: don't take my fancy* bike out unless it's fancy bike conditions.

*It's a 1988 muddy fox, so fancy is a fairly relative term, but I CBA with rusty running gear all the same.

  • What underwear do people use in longer rides instead of padded shorts?

I've always toured with bibs, but don't want to carry loads of pairs of them.
