I am not a fabrics expert or anything, but for reasonable efforts I found merino mix or merino jerseys way too heavy, too hot in mild weather and hard to layer on top of as they don't breathe as well as poly, and so got heated out or sweaty mess into icy cool-down. Maybe that's why merino is the go-to for baselayers, because they trap heat but evaporate better than cotton. Poly is more breathable and evaporates better than merino. Albion jersey is really soft, lightly thick and so paired with the super breathable but somehow v warm gilet it's a very effective combo.
