Overpriced BMX with disc brakes

  • car addiction is real in the background!

  • The frame was supposed to drop after last Christmas and now is delayed until maybe this March. Who knows maybe even longer.

    I put a pre-order on a frame so it’s on!

I could get my hands on a XXL, but I’m thinking the reach will be too long. I don’t want a little bike that’s TOO BIG…

I’m going to equip it with a dropper post too. I’m dropper curious.

  • Leicester is a fucking joke with cars. Local council is doing reasonable work (some protected lanes, talk of workplace parking levy) considering what I assume is colossal push back from population but the traffic levels even on quiet roads are insane.

I actually can't believe that people don't mind driving here given that you are constantly negotiating down two way roads with solid lines of cars on both sides narrowing the carriageway to a single. It's extremely stressful but it shows how addicted people are that they don't mind it. There's obviously no where to park when you arrive either.

Sends me into despair thinking too much about it.

  • there are always going to be huge push backs from the driving set on any changes that upset the 'norm'

completely agree with you that traffic levels in and around Leicester are crazy, but on the flip side, loads of effort has been put in to make everything accessible by bike, multiple park and ride sites which were well used in the before times, hire bike scheme etc. which are expanding outwards from town. annual cycle festival with closed roads.

my commute from Loughborough to Leicester city centre is traffic free for the last 6 miles, and we have a lot of cycle commuters at our office (trying to convince more...)

i think half the battle is getting people to try alternative methods once, and for them to then realise how much less hassle it is than they perceive.

  • I feel like it's a multi dimensional war and I'm sick of it. Just got charged by a SUV for no real reason. Ban them all.

  • I actually picked up Zee rd and shifter to potentially put on this bike, but don't really feel a strong need right now. The current gearing is great. Might consider it when I wear the SS chain out (never)

  • If you’re enjoying your Neutrino in it’s current state all the power to you. Nice to have options.

I know this is another bucket of worms did you set up tubeless? I pretty sure the Maxxis Grifters you have are tubeless or in the BMX world “foldable”.

Winters are not kind to the roads out here after a thaw. I appreciate that little bit of cushioning.

  • No way. I am a big fan of tubeless but I haven't got tubeless rims on there and daren't risk anything like that.

  • A few questions. I set up the tubeless rims with foldable tires. They’ve held up with air with no problem. In your opinion is this sound? Trust me I won’t be going all out Sam Pilgrim on it.

Desperation is setting in. I may be still able to snag an XXL frame. Would you recommend? Looking at the numbers my stand over is not an issue it’s the reach I’m second guessing at. Perhaps shorter stem
    a gaggle of spacers?

First world problems. That being said please have peace in the Ukraine.

  • I think I wouldn't really want to size up on a neutrino frame if I didn't have to, especially if I was intending to travel with it. The main triangle is already pretty huge.

That said a short stem would make running handlebar bags easier, so maybe?

  • @Belagerent
What height would the Neutrino be with the seat dropped right down?
Currently trying to figure if one of these would fit in the car/coach for the commute.

  • It doesn't actually go that small if you just drop the seatpost, Maybe about 100cm from the floor to top of saddlewith wheels on?

If I wan to stow it i normally take the seatpost off entirely which decreases the height to something like 80cm from the floor.

  • If this helps you with your calculations at all, I bought a small and the distance from the top of the seat tube to the top bottle cage boss is 180 mm. Assuming that the bottle cage bosses are in the same position relative to the bottom bracket between sizes, that would make the equivalent distance on a large (assuming this is what you bought) 230 mm.

For what it's worth, with my saddle rails to bottom bracket measurement (660 mm) on a size small Neutrino (360 mm seat tube), I should be able to get 180 mm of drop with a OneUp V2 (which has the most drop per length of any dropper I've been able to find; most others would give me 150 mm), resulting in 120 mm of post above the seat tube when dropped. I think that's not bad. I'm just trying to decide if I should go with a dropper or a flexible carbon post instead.

  • currently thinking of buying a neutrino and already checking build-up options (singlespeed). any update on this? still happy, also with the ssp option?

  • It bangs yeah. Pic is a late summer trip to Rutland Water.

  • can we expect a gcn style comparison

  • GCN presenter effortlessly climbing an insanely steep hill whilst talking:

"Now the specs for this bike are impressive, on paper that is, but can it give some of the more boutique brands a run for their money? After all it has a nimble frame, hydraulic disc brakes and even a wide range cassette, for something that costs 460 pounds it rides a lot more like a bike that costs much more, maybe 520 pounds. So should you buy it instead of a Neutrino?"

Cut to side on camera car footage as he stands up to "give it some welly" but he immediately loses balance and falls into a hedge. Emergency services are called and he continues the monologue from the stretcher.

"And the answer is no, you shouldn't, and here's why: it's a Halfords bike that was delivered to me with a headset done up so tight I couldn't turn the front wheel. It literally does not compete on any level except price. Where it does excel is being stored under the stairs and having a big thick down tube you can put big stickers on."

  • Where it does excel is [...] having a big thick down tube you can put big stickers on."

That's a solid pro in my eyes! I mean as a kid I used to own a little book to collect and showcase all my cool stickers. I feel like at my age that's not socially accepted anymore. Now I need to buy bike after bike to collect my stickers.
