Personally, unless long battery life is important, I'd get a slightly older refurbished laptop. They are nicer to use than the equivalent priced new laptop and generally better specs.

Wife needs a small laptop so she can use Smart Notebook at school (teacher not student). Her mac is too old to install the latest OS which is a requirement.

Whats the best bet for a cheap laptop to run this/use in a classroom. Portability and low cost definitely a plus.
