  • Back in the day when I used oils (which to be fair was at school) we just used white spirit. I'm sure it's very poor practice and it would be obvious to anyone who knows how to do it properly, but we were happy with it.

    I think linseed makes it take even longer to dry - good it you want to work the paint a long time, not so good if you need to get it to school the next day. Preparing my A level exhibition I was often driving wet oil paintings to school with tissue paper laid over.
