This is really about drivers not really having any exposure to cyclists there. Going on rides downtown in the 90s was wild. If you were seen, other drivers reacted in either overly cautious or dangerous ways - there was no in between.
I cycled into Aldine once by accident.
Probably set my PB ftp heading the other way by the time I realised at the scrapyards.

No one knew Aldine existed until they built the Hardy Toll Road. True story.
