• Hobbes wasn't even talking about human life in previous times, he was talking about what life would be like without a functioning society (best ruled by a king or dictator, in his view). Somehow it's been widely misquoted as a comment on previous history.

    That's the point I was going to make, but I thought it might be too GC to mention the point that we discussed this when I was studying Legal Philosophy at university.

    Wasn't Hobbes referring to what philosophers call a 'state of nature'?
