Hobbes' position is not based on a scientific or historically-informed view of early history - it's a fabricated history developed for the polemic purpose of his argument in Leviathan. The same is true of Rousseau's.
Isn't golf club, but should be.

we need a Parklife! thread for that sort of comment (I imagine I am guilty of many)

I've done a few cooking courses at his place in Soho and the Wok Clock is really, really useful when you have lots of ingredients to manage for a complex stir fry.

A good point, well argued
Indeed:
Hobbes wasn't even talking about human life in previous times, he was talking about what life would be like without a functioning society (best ruled by a king or dictator, in his view). Somehow it's been widely misquoted as a comment on previous history.

That's the point I was going to make, but I thought it might be too GC to mention the point that we discussed this when I was studying Legal Philosophy at university.

Being educated isn't very golf club. What use are the novels of Wordsworth when you're making a mint on the money markets?

It's been a long time since I read Hobbes, Rousseau, JS Mill et al, as I subsequently discovered the works of Andy McNab and haven't looked back.
Wasn't Hobbes referring to what philosophers call a 'state of nature'?
