The phono cable or something else? Any suggestions on what i should be looking for? I've found a few lengthy videos on youtube for servicing the 1300 so will check out them out thanks.

  • the new version of the AT95E

The VM unit? Look like mine has been discontinued although it may well be a fake

  • Yeah the phono cables and the ground wire. Doesn't need to be anything too fancy, it's worth noting that Project do an already prepared kit for like £40 and it looks smart, otherwise something with oxygen free copper and gold connectors will be a step up, you might need to buy the ground cable separate, it's not really that important to get a good quality one.

A bit of deoxit and some contact lubricant will do you well.

If you need a syringe for the bearing and live in Walthamstow give me a nudge I've got some spare.

If the platter is low you might need to do something with the suspension, but when I looked into this there was a lot of chat along the lines of "spares not available" and you can make the grommet from an inner tube. I needed a deep socket for the suspension adjustment if you don't already have one.

  • Yes, the VM. I've had a few of the AT95e and some of the stylus were quite a long way out of spec. I've assumed there are a lot of fakes around since it's a popular mass produced item.

The Paratrace has been great though.

  • Thanks both, I love a project and I like buying shit so today has been a win

  • Some Reggae Roast,Boom Donovan Green and Mungo's through the door today.

  • Nice haul, we'll all be over to you in the summer for a soundsystem jam!

  • Ha, I have an all day harvest festival party in our garden every year when the potato crop is ready.
I'm hoping to amass enough reggae and dub for 3 hours of listening pleasure.
Some Yami Bolo through the door today.

  • Anyone here used CloudBeats app? I just discovered it yesterday and it sounds good. I’ve ripped my whole record collection in aiff for dj use when I can’t take records and have always put them on Dropbox as I’ve had enough spare space. Always frustrated that I can’t make playlists on the Dropbox app though. Had a look and found the app. It scans your cloud storage and then let’s you use it like Spotify but without compression.

It’s currently scanning my library but it’s a touch buggy, maybe due to 5k+ files. Hoping once it’s got it all scanned it’ll work well though. Plenty of good reviews on the App Store

  • VG+ 😩

  • I had one recently that was VG+ and there was an actual piece missing from the surface!!! They were pretty good and refunded it though.

I have come across one seller who is very optimistic with his gradings. I sent a bunch back to him and won't use him again.

    What record was it?

Got the EP for the flip side which is fine. Still annoying tho.

  • Would you even grade that VG?

  • Probably G+ would be fair, with a comment to say the other sides of the EP are all VG+, and maybe explain that this side is what makes the grading as such due to that one prominent scratch which noticeably affects playback at the start of that track (which is probably the one most people would actually be buying it for as it’s the A side). This came in same shipment from the same seller also as VG+ and would be fairer to say VG I think.

There are the odd folk that rate based on the lowest condition plate/side and give some commentary like that, but I find that almost all the stuff I look at seems to just be graded VG+ by default with ‘N/A’ in the comments 😆

  • First one looks more like VG than the second which I would say is G+ unless it plays a lot better than it looks.

Heres an extract from the goldmine standard for VG :-

Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.

I think everyone struggles with grading. Most of my records are new from a distro, not even been through a shop and probably 1 in 10 could be graded NM if you held to strict standards. So many pressing faults and damage from new these days.

  • Picked up the Soul Jazz 3lp reissue of The Mystic Revelation Of Rastafari over Christmas. Opened it up today and as I slide the 1st disc out it scratched on whatever crap was present in the thin cardboard inner. Luckily it's not audible but still, why are sealed records covered in crap and why not use decent inners? Same goes for International Anthems who also use vinyl mashing card inners...

Great album though! ...maybe I should've got the cd version for a third of the price...

  • Soul Jazz are on my list to avoid for quality reasons. I still buy some of their CD's though and the Between 2 Islands release last year was great.

  • @nonowt

I always keep a stash of HDPE sleeves and replace all paper sleeves on arrival.

That is a great album by the way, I bought a copy years ago

  • @eskay Cheers - I've ordered a 100 pack from Spincare. Yep, great album- much more jazzy than I was expecting. Really enjoying it.

@Airhead first Soul Jazz release I've bought in a couple of years. I'll save the cash and get the cd version next time.

  • Some Empress Black Omolo and Ras Tweed today.

  • Nice!! I had Rebel Rock by Third World All Stars delivered this week but it was really badly warped. Pressure sounds were great though and refunded record and my postage.

  • My mother-in-law has been trying to find (for years!) a record of her father singing in a choir that was recorded at least 70 years ago. She stumbled across it quite by chance tonight and brought it over.

I have never seen a record like it, it has bee 'moulded' over an aluminum plate. Unfortunately it has started to blister and delaminate, but luckily the two tracks are still intact.

The quality was pretty poor (and it is a 78) but speeding it up in Audacity and cleaning the waveform a little yielded a reasonable recording which she is absolutely over the moon with. She thought she would never hear it (her father died when she was 18).

I guess it is quite an early 10" dubplate!

Really interesting document here on the Permarec system:

  • How is everyone cleaning their records?
And I don't mean cleaning 30 year old stuff that has been sitting in a dusty barn, but new ones -
the thought of having to clean newly bought records before even playing them always annoyed me, but frankly I've had a few in the last weeks (shrink wrapped, fresh from the store) that sounded really shit - but got better (sometimes a lot better) by cleaning them.

The method I'm using is: 50/50 mix of alcohol and water in a spray bottle and a clean soft cloth (I read somewhere that's what some famous radio DJ was doing so I figured it must be good, plus it seemed cheap and do-able : )
It's actually a bit more of a faff it turns out, if you want to do it properly and not just quickly wipe the thing a bit - it works though (like I said sometimes really well, sometimes just so-so).

Are there better methods is my question I guess.
These Spincare / Knosti things are really just for cleaning big (20-40) batches, right?
