  • that will be five hundred bitcoin pls

  • but the old standards.

No way! There's a reason old houses are cold and damp with bouncy floors and have rubbish foundations.

"They don't build them like they used to" is a good thing IME.

  • How would an electrician do a survey if most of the cables are hidden inside walls etc?

By plugging in expensive equipment that checks the cables. The electrician will also have the experience of similar houses/problems/testing and can advise on other things the magic equipment may not be able to detect.

A mate going round and looking at sockets won't be able to do much of this. (Depends on their experience obviously.)

  • Spoken like someone who's never lived in a Barratt house

  • Basic, built-to-a-price houses were shitter back in the day.

Anything old that is now good has been upgraded, repaired and modified over the years to contemporary standards.

  • My ideal house would be a brand new build with all the warranty and receipts but the old standards.

I bought a brand new house once. They didn't even follow the relevant standards at the time. Used the wrong blocks for the party wall. So many lols. Basically home ownership is shit but better than the money pit renting is and warmer than a tent.

  • How do they get inside?

  • Has anyone ever used these guys? Their quote was bizarrely cheap. Internet reviews seem good, but I don't know how much to trust those.

  • Fuckin hell, so many questions. How did someone get planning to build they 2 so close to each other and the other fuckin hell a half a million for that. Jesus wept.

  • That's a palace compared to what you can get for £500k in SW London.

  • I’m fairly confident I’ve seen houses built closer together than that. Sometimes touching.

We used them for our move last September from London to Stroud. We were trying to keep costs down, so packed ourselves and they just did the moving.

In the whole I’d say they were good. A lovely bunch of guys who were easy to talk to and nothing was a problem. However there were elements that could have been better. They underestimated the size of the move, so loading took longer which meant everything finished late at the other end. I decided to pitch in to get things done at the new place and without doing so the move would have gone on until the early hours. Also there was some minor damage to a couple of bits of furniture, however it was ikea and I know dismantling that stuff is rarely successful.

So, you do get what you pay for. But if that works for you then they’re decent.

  • Good to know, thanks. Sounds like I'd need to make sure my amps and guitars went with someone else, but other stuff will be worth the risk.

  • Aye you dont get much for 500k in london that's for sure.

  • Found this video of a couple building a house for their elderly parents on a $17k budget. 25 minute time lapse. Inspiring stuff.

  • Must be cool living somewhere where people are allowed to do things.

  • That said, someone was allowed to do this at some point, so maybe anything's possible.

  • Previously the garage of the house next door? For £650k I’d park on the street too.

  • Work hard, save a £65k deposit plus costs, get a £150k a year job and you too could live in a dream house like that one.

  • You’d have to have a burning desire to live in a detached “house”. Bigger flats available in nicer locations for less.
